Hi all! I've been reading everything I've been able to get my hands on here for the past 2 months; I decided to rescue (word used intentionally) an absolutely tiny beardie from PetCo 2 months ago. The Mister saw him while I was getting kitty supplies.
I'm not a newcomer to being a reptile's parent (I've had 3 Chinese water dragons, a beardie, a crested gecko, and 3 leopard geckos over the past 20 years), but my new little one is by far the smallest lizard I have ever adopted and I wanted to make sure that I was armed with all of the knowledge of you good people here going into this venture. I was a nervous wreck the first month because he (she?) was SO small. I work from home and was going downstairs every hour to offer food, water, and show him/her how much they are loved. I panicked a few times thinking he'd eaten something too large. It was hard to find food as small as I thought he needed.
It's been a beautiful 2 months and we have bonded so well! No matter how tired I am after dinner, I make a point to take him out of the cage and get some exercise / play time in. When he's pooped himself out, he's taken to climing up my arm and burying himself in my hair (my hair is pretty long and hangs well below my shoulders) to go to sleep. It is so hard to put him back when it is time for me to go to bed!!
I'm so happy that he likes his nightly snuggles, and, more importantly, so happy that he truly seems to enjoy my company. I've noticed that he knows (and responds to) my voice and will run towards me sometimes when we're playing.
You can see that I am head over heels in love with my little guy.
I'm much more relaxed now that he has more than doubled in size over the past 2 months, yet I continue to read on here daily to ensure I learn all that I need to give him the best life he can have.
I want to thank all of you for creating such an amazing place to share knowledge and educate others, and for welcoming folks like me who get confused by all of the conflicting information from pet stores and other (inferior) sites.
I shake my head in dismay about the calci-sand that Petco pushes. Why do they tell their employees and customers that stuff is ok??? I had 3 lizards at the vet when I first got started raising herps due to that garbage. When I rescued my Ramses the Petco dude tried to get me to buy it and when I commented about risk of impaction, especially in babies, he told me I was completely wrong and that lizards get their calcium from it. Sigh.
It really hurts "in the feels" to imagine how many unknowing folks use that stuff and end up killing their babies because they don't know better.
Anyway! I apologize for the terribly long intro.
TLDR: thanks to all of you for creating an amazing community full of vast knowledge. You guys rock.
Best,
Kristen and Ramses
