(Terribly original subject line, isn't it? It's too early to be creative... )
We're getting our first beardie at the beginning of April from the amazing - and amazingly helpful - Jessica at Yellow Room Reptiles. Ours is the very first one on the available page. Isn't she cute? We're calling her Wave - we have a one-year-old daughter, and I asked her to point at what she wanted to call the new addition (she's big on pointing these days). She looked at me for a moment, then waved at me. So "Wave" it is!
I've always liked animals of all shapes and sizes, but have never had an opportunity to have a reptile - aside from the snakes and lizards I caught as a kid in the creek behind our house, which inevitably ended up right back where they started when my parents offered me the usual resolute "no." But I've always wanted one, and when I started doing my research - and after finding out that you can't buy an aquatic turtle in Mississippi - I started reading about dragons and their personalities, and decided that was the lizard for us! I started doing my research and getting things ready, and now - multiple trips to supply shops and Amazon later - we're finally almost ready. I can't wait.
We already have a 7-year-old greyhound/Saluki mix, and hope to eventually have more greyhounds. I'm resolutely in the "make a fast friend - adopt a greyhound" category of people. We also have a rat, who is enjoying some solo affection in her old age (her two cagemates, sadly, have died, but she thrives on getting all the attention and treats now, so we've decided not to subject her to a new roommate at her age). As I mentioned, we also have a one-year-old daughter, who is more trouble than any animal could be. She loves animals, though - is fascinated by them. She would live at the zoo if we would let her, and animals seem attracted to her. Being rather of a scientific mindset, I'm inclined to doubt it's possible, but animals seem to be attracted to her, too - when we're at the zoo, animals that have ignored every other person that goes by will come right up to the glass or the edge of the enclosure to see her. All sorts of animals have done this - the tigers, the giraffes, the bears, the otters, the lemurs. Or maybe they just see her as a nice lunch! Regardless, I want her to love and respect animals, domesticated and otherwise, and I want her to grow up with pets, helping care for them and nurture them. The dragon is for her - the others have been around longer than she has! - and while I know she may not ever be able to care for Wave herself, Wave is hers in spirit, and I'll be the caretaker in her stead.
I've been having a great time with this site, getting lots of advice and reading about problems others have run into, in hopes of avoiding those problems myself. I'm the consummate n00b at the moment, but I'm already fixing some problems I might have otherwise run into through perusing the forums and caresheets - like realizing that ReptiGlo tube I got wouldn't quite do it. Whoops. ReptiSun, here I come! Waiting for my temp gun, too - I never knew such a thing existed! My husband keeps pushing me to have a hobby, and it sounds like a dragon will require enough careful monitoring and research that I will be able to occupy myself with that for a long, long time. We're planning to start our own garden to grow her foods - anyone have any advice for that?
Best wishes to all, and thanks for being such a great bunch of people! (The kind attitude here is amazing - I guess reptile fanciers, being somewhat maligned by the population generally, have learned to get along better than most online? I love the atmosphere of kindness and friendly advice here - honey rather than vinegar! I've seen a lot of animal-related forums that can't manage that, and run a lot of people off to continue making mistakes as a result.)
...Wow, what a ramble. And more about the kid than the beardie! Sorry about that. I promise I'll have pictures as soon as Wave is ours!
