Hey everyone I just joined the site because I am planning on getting a baby beardie this friday or saturday. This will be my first time getting a beardie but I have had a bunch of other lizards and I currently have a veiled chameleon named Spyro. I was unaware that sand was harmful to baby dragons. If anyone has any other little helpful tips it would be greatly appreciated. I'll post a picture of my new beardie once I get him but for now I figured I would post a pic of my baby chameleon.

Welcome to the board! Its a good thing that you found out about the sand first. Especially stay away from calci- sand, and crushed walnut shells, these are the worst substrates available and can cause impaction and death if ingested. Suitable substrates are paper towels, repticarpet, or slate tile. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask (especially about lighting). If you're unsure of anything, please ask, some pet stores go out of their way to misinform people. Especially about lighting and enclosures. Just to make sure of this in the beginning, you will need a UVB light and a basking bulb. The only one that is guaranteed safe right now is ReptiSUN 10.0 or 5.0. The minimum enclosure for one adult is a 40 gallon breeder. NEVER house more than one beardie to a single tank. I'm really sorry to bombard you with all this, but every day there are people coming on here with problems because they were misinformed, and taken advantage of. Good luck and keep us posted!

Hey I was wondering what peoples thoughts were on the under tank heaters? I know to stay away from heat rocks and things like that but i wasn't sure about the under tank ones. Also I was wondering what thermometers anyone would recommend because I have read on some posts that the little tank ones are not very accurate. I am looking for cheaper solutions because I a little short on money. I was looking at getting a 20 gallon tank to house the new baby when I get it but I was also wondering since I have an old 10 gallon one if that would be ok until I have the money to purchase probably a 55 gallon tank. Thanks for the help any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

They need over head heat, not under heat. They cannot sense heat through their bellies, and can very easily get burned. They actually have a third "eye" on the top of their head that senses heat. Also I was wondering what thermometers anyone would recommend because I have read on some posts that the little tank ones are not very accurate. I am looking for cheaper solutions because I a little short on money. You should get a probe thermometer called an acu-rite, they are $12 and very acurite(lol)They sell them at walmart. Yeah, a 10 gal would be okay for maybe 3 or 4 months... However, a 55gal isn't enough space for a beardie. You need "breeder" tanks because they have floor space rather than height. So if you can find a 55gal breeder, go for it, but their hard to come by. A lot of people build their own tanks.. Google crossfire enclosure for good instructions on how to make one.. I think those are 120gal, and run about $100-$200 to make. Thanks for the help any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Awwwww what a sweetie, I just love babies. You'll have to keep us all updated on length & weight once he's comfy being in his new home and starts to grow. Our babies loved the spruce plastic bushes that you can get at a pet shop. They're not expensive and they have little suckers to hold them up on the glass. We always had a bush sideways so it was easy to crawl up. Issy used it to watch for enemies, well you never know right? It's instinctive for babies to want to be up high and to have something to hide behind. Babies need to be warmer than adults, so 105F-110F on the basking spot would be best temps for digesting. Don't forget that babies eat tons & tons of pinhead crickets, you need to feed the crickets-it's called gut-loading, so your beardie gets enough protein. I used to buy collard greens or bok choy & butternut squash. I used a small food processor to mince the squash, then cut the greens into little squares & put that into the cool side of the tank in a lid of some sort. Our babies loved it. I also added calcium daily & once a week multivitamins. To have a healthy dragon, you have to have a healthy baby. You'll need to make sure he/she can be fed 3x/day, as many little crickets as he can eat in 10-15 min. Then bask at least 2 hours after each feeding so the food gest properly digested. You'll notice that your baby will be on & off the basking spot all day. We used newspaper when they were little as a substrate, 'cause it was easy to get and they could run across it without getting their little nails stuck. Easy to clean the poops, too.

How old is your little one? I'll be waiting for more pics :D . I've enclosed a pic of Issy in the spruce bush:

There's always someone on the forum to give any advice that you may need. The care sheets on this site are really well done and there's a great site www.beautifuldragons.com on which there is a great nutrition list. There's also a store. The lady who runs the rescue that the store is connected to is a wonderful person & has some great info on her website. We have 4 dragons and we're fostering 2 more. We've had Sweetie for 4 years, since she was 4 mo old. The others we adopted or rescued. Just so you'd have a background on us.

Welcome :D :D ,
Deb

Hey Bowser is 8 inches long including the tale and the body is approximately 3.25 inches long. He/she weighs 19 grams and likes to lick everything :p and it cracks me up. Bowser reminds me of a dog because he/she sometimes scratches his/her head with their back leg or rubs it on the ground. Is it normal for my beardie to wedge itself into a small spot to sleep? I'll post more pictures soon. And would anyone be able to tell the sex at this time or could they give me an approx age given my beardie's size? Thanks This forum has been a great resource for me

Yes, take a picture with your beardie flat on your palm, and lift up the tail. Like so...

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
