Please pray for Hermes and the rest of his family. Many of you have been with Hermes and I since we first got him. He has been through the war and back. By this I mean, calcium deficienicies, parasites, multiple vets--found one we like, accidentally being stepped on and then an ER ANIMAL hospital stay , not to mention the mini smoke fire in his cage and his MBD that resulted in many broken bones to the fault of noone. we have hand fed him for the last 1 1/2 yrs and he has been very dedicated to my girls. He is actually my 13 yr old daughters lizard and he is almost 3 1/2 yrs old (he turned 3 in November, as many of you know we never thought he would make it to age 2.
Anyway, he is very dehyrated-giving him several baths today but this morning he was quite stiff and my 13 yr old asked if he was (we both felt he was dead but he woke for her). I have given him the liquid calcium per Tracies instructions along with the serraptase. For a few months he ate on his own, then went back to being hand fed his critical care etc. He has ulcers in his mouth now from not being able to eat properly--he lets it sit in his moutokay h before swallowing.
This morning I woke to find that he had drooled some of what my husband fed him last night all over his tile and mouth. I know if it were totally my dragon, I would just have the vet put him down at this point--very skinny an obviously in pain. But it is my daughter's lizard and I wont make that decision for her. So if you could please pray that God allows his pain to ease and if it is his time, to let him go on to the rainbow bridge. And for the family to make the much needed decision with how much pain he is in.

Love

It is so hard to be the caretakers of animals. They are mute and can't tell us what they need, what is wrong, or when it is their time. They do not see any future hope, like we see. They can't conceive of sufferring to get better, all they know is today and that they are sufferring today. They live in the now.

My Dad taught me all of what I just said. It was all over a horse, and knowing when it was time. It's not that we are giving up on them, it's releasing them from pain. I hope you can help your daughter understand what my Dad helped me understand. Many tears were shed, but my Dad supported me and I knew he was right. He just had a way of conveying it. Funny because he never comes off as a sensitive person, and maybe that's why the subject held so much weight with me.

I will be honestly thinking about you and your daughter, and her little lizard friend. I hope for all of you that you can find peace in whatever decision you make.

Im so sorry. Both for the difficult decisions surrounding your daughter's decision and for his pain. we reciently had to go through something similar with both our dogs. One dog my mom strung along for 6 months before finally being able to put him out of his misery, but because of this she was able to see the signs in our other dog and let him go. I was so proud of her for this. The loss of a family pet is so hard but knowing that it's going to be the best thing you can do for that animal helps to ease the pain and guilt of making that decision.

shannys response was best. Talk to your kid and tell her how much he's suffering then tell her she can make the decision to send him to a better place

Thanks all. He was looking better again last night but it is so hard to decide what to do. I learned that my husband had SPOON fed him his stuff so it might not have been drool afterwards as my husband said he dropped a lot trying to feed him. LOL at least my husband tried (I had been away for the weekend)
I am still needing to talk with my daughter tho as he loooks so skinny still but he turns yellow (his happy colors) whenever he sees one of us and last night his head was up following my husband around whenever he walked into my daughters bedroom.
So just continue praying and pray that if he is in that much pain, the rainbow bridge is waiting for him I know. I NEVER thought I would be this attached to any reptile.
Thanks again everyone

I NEVER thought I would cry for reptiles I have never met. God gave us all hearts and they can't help but love.

I've moved this to ER so more people will see it and maybe have a solution to help Hermes feel better. added by moderator
I'm so sorry to hear that Hermes is not doing well, but it's good to know he's lived past everyone's expectations. I will pray for him & that you all make the right decision, I know how hard it can be. Is there nothing that can be done to help him improve at this time? Having your daughter understand when it's time to let go will be difficult & I wish you all the best with your decision. I wish there was a magical potion to make him better :(
Best of luck to you all,
Deb

Julianne, I know how horrible this is to go through. I can picture all of it because it's just about what I went through with little Gizmo who passed away last Tuesday. It is heartbreaking. I will let you know that it IS a good sign that he is alert and brightens up when he sees your daughter. Be sure to keep him very well hydrated with frequent baths and offering oral fluids. Have you ever tried diluted 100% juice (no sugar added) like cherry, apple, cranberry or grape? You can use 3 parts water to 1 part juice. They take it better if it is heated in the microwave (or use quite warm water) to take the chill off, then put drops on his nose to see if Hermes will lick it off.

Are you sure that the ulcers in his mouth aren't fungal related from the antibiotics?

Thinking and praying for all of you.

Diane and all
Thanks for the prayers. He took some critical this afternoon but I think he is so dehyrdated not sure if increasing the baths more will help--will do so though if he makes it through tomorrow. It was this time last year that we spent close to $750 to have him stay overnight etc and we thought it was semi brumation later but right now I am not even sure he will make it until tomorrow morning. (And I would pay a bunch of money in the world to actually keep him alive but ONLY if it would be comfortable for him)
My daughter has asked me to call the vet and see what she says. I gave the option of my daughter to come with me but have also told her that she MAY have to make a difficult decision, and do whats best for his comfort. My mom calls him the LIzard with a Cats nine lives---and Diane, tracey and Tom (and many others on here) know of Hermes story from the beginning.
Just realized I have him on a rice sock wrapped in a hand towel and it is bedtime and that is often how he sleeps. He occasionally after having the food dripped on him a little while , the mouth will start bleeding.
I would think no not ulcers from antibiotics as he hasnt been on any in a long time.
His back legs are so skinny that the bottom and top almost look as if they are one and thats what concerns my husband and i the most.
So pray that if it is his time to cross the rainbow bridge it is down quickly and peacefully. My poor daughter had to decide to put down her guinea pig either last year or the year before. At least we all know that he was greatly loved by all of us.
Okay I gotta go now before I start crying.
Thanks again guys and will keep you posted.

Hi,
I'm so sorry about the situation you and your family have to face. Poor Hermes....and you!
I wish there was something to say or do to help!

I absolutely believe Hermes knows how much you love him. I believe him showing you his
happy colors when he sees one of you, even though he's so very sick, is proof of that!

I will keep you all in my thoughts and say a prayer for you, your family and little Hermes too!

It's very hard to say goodbye to a beloved pet. I've been through it, too, but not for the same reasons. I'll pray for you all, too, that if he has to go, he'll go in peace.
Take care

Hello Julianne,

Oh no, I am so sorry to hear about Hermes, he has been such a trooper! He has sure outlived what was expected out of him.
I will keep you all in my prayers & hopefully Hermes will be comforted with having you all with him, whatever you decide.
It is the most difficult decision that you all will have to make.
Let me know if you need anything.

Thanks all. Hermes has an appt at 11:30am this morning. We will see what the vet has to say. If $ would make him better I would find a way but the last xrays showed many broken bones from his MBD that had not healed or did not heal properly. Between this and one of their *uncles* (close church family friend in the hospital), Brittany (Hermes owner) and Samantha are having tough time. We will keep you posted.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
