My bearded dragon Jonathan has been acting strange. He is not very active and has dark circles around his eyes. He is a juvenile beardie. I got him at pets, art about a month ago and he was fine until a couple days ago, Please Help!
He has been like this for about three days. I have a 29 gallon tank with reptile carpet. I use a heat lamp and two other lights that I am not sure what they are called, one is UVB. I feed him large crickets which I dust once a day with calcium. He eats about ten large crickets a day. He also closes his eyes a lot and has been ignoring food such as crickets and lettuce
How long is he? The large crickets might be too big for him and he could be impacted. A good rule of thumb is never to give feeders bigger than the space between their eyes. Larger crickets also have more chitin which makes them harder to digest.
What uvb do you have on him? Is it a compact/coil? or is it a long tube uvb, and which brand? If it's a coil type, it may not be giving him enough uvb, also some have been known in the past to cause PKT problems (basically it hurts their eyes and makes them keep their eyes closed), now, however, they just don't give them enough uvb for them.
So it's a reptisun tube, is it a 10? There is also a reptisun 5 which isn't quite strong enough for beardies, they need a 10. If you are unsure, one end of the tube says what it is.
About taking him to a vet and the cost: the cost depends on the vet you go to. I would choose a vet that has experience with reptiles, especially bearded dragons. If you go to any vet, they tend to know less about beardies than you do.
I was also curios about cleaning his cage, do you need to use disinfecting stuff or can you just use soap and water. I also read that soap smells bad to them so I would have to let the smell go away
I got my beardie on 9/20/13 at pet smart, he looks healthy, but is starting to act weird. He is not very active and when I try to feed him crickets, he won't eat them. This started today. I use calcium powder for the crickets. He will only eat mealworms which is not good. I have a 29 gallon tank and use reptile carpet. I have a heat lamp, UVB, and another lamp which i do not know the name of. I do not think this is because of brumation. Please Help
