Just a quick re-introduction.
Our family had a Bearded Dragon, Norbert, for years. We had to move from our house into an apartment and we were not sure if we would have room for Norbert and rehomed him. He was in a display case that we converted into an enclosure. Norbert was well taken care of with help from this board and another one that I was a member of, but can't remember the name.
We are taking care of a bearded dragon that was kept at the school where my wife works. The teacher that had him did not have a basking light and had a 5.0 UVB bulb that is over a year and half old. He was fed lettuce and lots over fruit, mostly oranges, and meal worms without any type of supplements. He was kept on sand that was probably never cleaned.
We took him home yesterday and cleaned his house and put newspapers on the bottom. He now has a basking light and is getting fed silkworms and a nice salad mainly made with collard greens. He had what was probably his first bath ever this morning. The 40 gallon tank he is in does not have a screen and the light hood sits on top. The flourescent bulb is about 3 inches from the top of the tank. It has the long flourescent bulb and a place for 3 incandecent bulbs. Now my questions...
1. Do you think that since there is no screen on the tank to block the UVB, if I get a 10.0 UVB it will provide him with enough UVB even though it is not as close as I would like? 2. Is there still an issue with the compact flourescent UVB bulbs, or would it be a good idea to put a couple of those in there instead of the long tube? We also have a 100wt Powersun, but I think that might be too hot this time of the year.
Spike is in pretty bad shape. He is very thin and has very little muscle mass. He was described as being very tame, but I think that is more to do with not having any strength to move! I wonder how he is still alive or at least does not have MBD. We are going to observe hm for a while and get a basic check up done to make sure he is healthy. I don't know if this teacher is going to get him back after the summer, not if he is going to treat him the same way!
