Hello everyone!
I'm a newbie to the bearded dragon world...I've been wanting one of these lil buggers for many many years, and now finally have my little buddy! But, I've also done a lot of researching before buying the beardie.
His/Her name is Falcor! It's a spunky guy/gal (dont know what sex it is, i suspect male?), very friendly & active, I think I am very lucky, from what I've been reading and researching, to have come across such a personable reptile!
I've had falcor for about a month now, and have learned alot...i'm very acute to what he likes and dislikes, i watch his behaviors very closely, and i think he and I are happier because of it!
He loves crickets, mealworms and mustard greens. I was worried the little guy wouldnt eat any vegetables but he will chow down on them in between live food.
Took me a few weeks and experimenting with different light bulbs. He doesnt like the pet store brands, i've spent a few bucks on them, and they did nothing for the little guy. I ended up just buying a halogen bulb, and that did the trick. The temp is to his liking, i guess he likes it hot! the temp gets to 100-110 degrees, anything lower and he gets moody, and doesnt digest his food on a regular basis. I'm using an aluminum dome for the bulb, but read that may not be a good thing, should i switch to a porcelain dome instead, is the aluminum dome too reflective, bad for the eyes? I also have a uv flourescent-tube light fixture on him.
He likes to be picked up, and he loves when i talk to him!! he gets excited when i come home from work and walk through the door. i'll hold him and carry him around, then he'll crawl up to my shoulder!!! sooooo cute i was very nervous he wouldnt like me, or be aggressive, but he is quite the little ham show-off!! lol!
Only thing is, I don't know how old he is? he's about 9-10 inches long from head to tail. I'm guessing a few months old? and, i am not sure if it's male or female. well, at least the name 'falcor' can go any way!! lol!
I have him in a pretty big aquarium, my background should be coming soon also, to make him even more comfortable in his home. Been browsing this site, and seen the vivarium forum, my goodness, puts my aquarium to shame!! so, now i am inspired to build falcor a bigger home for when he out-grows this one. i will have fun with that, lots of ideas from the forums. This is a wonderful site, i'm so glad to have found it.
i've read there are (i think) 7 different species of bearded dragons?? I think what I have is an inland dragon? i'm sure someone here will know right away! Also, how big, on average, does a beardie get?
Also, I've read its not good to have another beardie in the same home...which leads me to, are there any other reptilian creatures that are compatible with bearded dragons, or are they pretty territorial and solitaire? Would love to get him a buddy, but, would just be as happy letting him be on his own. More of a curious question for myself! As you can see, i'm very happy with the beardie, and love watching & learning about them.
Thank you for reading, and any help, suggestions, tips, etc. you have!
Here's Falcor, in all his-her glory!!
