hello, I'm a bearded dragon newbie also.

i've had falcor for little under a month now, she (i think its a she!) is wonderful.

i've been reading/navigating this site like a mad person, and have learned a lot already.

but, i made a mistake, i guess im not supposed to feed her mealworms? i've only been feeding her the very tiny mealworms! she eats way more crickets than mealworms anyway. So, not under any circumstances should i be feeding her mealworms? as of now, its been crickets & mealworms and mustard greens and bearded dragon pellet food. i keep her very well hydrated, but also just learned i should be bathing her once a week, this i havent done yet, but will now!

she seems to be just fine, she runs around, digests food on a regular basis, and is happy. im off to get her a uvb reptisun 10.0 bulb also. we just put in a background in her cage, and she seems even more comfortable.

i have a picture here, i actually started a thread in the wrong section! oops!

Hello  and welcome.

In general, meal worms just aren't a great feeder for beardeds. Their chitin shell presents an impaction risk, especially to young beardeds. What's more, is the fact that they just don't offer the nutrition your beardie needs. Gut-loaded crickets are great, as are dubia roaches. If you'd like to try worms, I suggest phoenix or silks (they are suitable as staples, or partial/combo staple with crickets). Both offer beardie a good ratio of fat to protein, and are full of nutrition besides. Phoenix have a great deal of natural calcium and are very small, so wonderful for growing babies. :) http://www.phoenixworms.com

Here is an excellent food resource list for dragons (do's, don'ts and everything in between): http://www.beautifuldragons.503xtreme.com/Nutrition.html

The best,
Em

wow, thank you Em!

just bought falcor some phoenix worms!! i don't know if i could handle the roaches though...**embarrasing** we had some roach problems in our house when i was growing up (not anymore) so i reaaaaalllllyyyy dislike those critters...
if i get over that phobia, maybe someday falcor can enjoy their crunchy goodness lol...or are they a soft-shell roach? gotta look it up now...

off to the grocery store for some greenies too :) i'm ecstatic that falcor likes veggies, she will go over to them and have a few bites about 2-3 times a day...is that good and enough? i've read some posts here of people having a terrible time getting their beardies to eat veggies...so i feel somewhat lucky. hopefully she continues this way! i'm dusting my crickets in calcium powder also, i'm no longer giving her mealworms. are waxworms good, or are they too fatty, and more of a treat?

what is the biggest of all the bearded dragon species? i know there is quite a few different types of beardies.

thanks again! :blob5:

ok, waxworms have a high phosphorus content, so barely ever will i feed her that...wow, the info is amazing on that site!!!

You're most welcome. :)

Indeed, if Falcor is enjoying the vegetation, more power to her. Our girl is over a year now and if I can get her to eat 4 salads a week, it's an accomplishment. But hey, it's better than when she wouldn't eat any at all. :dontknow: She also eats a bit of fruit every other day or so. along with her daily allotment of supers and phoenix or butters.

I hear ya on the roaches. A lot of people feel that way. If it helps, and if you're ever interested, the dubias are a not the same type that we've all come to be disgusted by, not the infestation type. If you're curious, the "feeders" board can be a wealth of information (I do believe there is crunchy goodness involved-LOL). I thought about roaches several times (they are less active and don't smell as crickets do), but now that our girl is over a year and only eating 40-50 bugs a week, I find worms to be easier, at least for now (that is, until beardie tires of them and needs some new variety).

Great that you got some information on the waxworms. They are best as a VERY occasional treat and then only a few. They are what some would call "beardie junk food" and along with not offering proper nutrition can sometime spoil beardie's appetite for more nutritious fare.

Best of luck with your new beardie! They are indeed very special creatures. :D

when i look at her in the cage, she really doesnt look any bigger to me, but when you see those pictures, wow...you can see she's grown a bit, and she looks happy & strong!!

she just eat some collard greens & spaghetti squash a few minutes ago! she's funny, if there arent greens in her cage, she gets upset with me...she 'expects' them to be there....LOL...only a few months old and full of attitude!!!

speaking of, holy cow is squash big...theres no way she'll eat all of that...it'll go bad beforehand...can you freeze halves of squash? how long will squash last? anyone need some squash??? lol!!

Oh, she is so so dear! :love5: Thank you for posting pics. We went to our local reptile expo over the weekend and I wanted to bring all the babies home with me! Alas, it was not to be. We did bring home a new baby though (a ball python), but oh all the baby beardies!

As to the squash, I hear ya there! I have brought many home that just end up sitting on the counter because I know once I open them I'll have to figure out a way to make them last! I have tried freezing butternut with some success, but they tend to get a bit mushy in the freeze for some reason. It's better if you can leave say, the half you don't use "in the skin" before popping them in the freeze as this seems to keep them a bit more firm.

Best of luck! Falcor is such a cutie and looking very good, all white underneath! :)

falcor10.jpg

everyday she gets to come out to play. i keep my very old hot rock, has to be close to 15-20 yrs old now from when i had some little anoles as a kid, this thing just gets luke warm, and i only keep it there for when she gets cold, she likes to sit there and look out the window!! falcor says 'you gotta clean off my table....now!!!"
falcor9.jpg

it was bath night, after i dry her off, she loves to cuddle with me under our fleece blanket, she snuggles right into my shoulder. i let her nap for about an hour after the bath...she's just so adorable and happy :)
falcor8.jpg

why are you taking a picture of me, can't you see i'm trying to nap here???? after this photo, she was out like a light bulb :)
falcor7.jpg

as you can see, we love our new little 3 month old baby :)

hope you enjoy the new photos :)

i have a question....if faclor does turn out to be a 'she', will they lay eggs, even if they never get pregnant?? just very curious, i have absolutely no intentions of breeding or bringing another beardie into my home. i just don't know if bearded dragons do this or not, and would like to be prepared, or know any symptoms?

also, what are the best vitamins to be feeding her, and what do they look like? are they something bearded dragons enjoy eating?

many many thanks once again :)

I love all your pics of Falcor!!! It's so cool to see just how fast they grow! Our baby, Alex, just like grew so fast.... Definite cutie you have there!

Females can lay eggs without ever being with a male. I have males, but I've read enough here to know for true. They would be infertile so I believe you can just through them out.

Enjoy Falcor!

hi again everyone!

so, falcor went in for her first vet appointment, and everything checked out just fine, she's perfectly healthy. The vet said she does have some coccidia, but the count is very low, he said nothing to worry about. Her flora count was good too.

the vet thinks it is a she also, but even he said it is still too early to tell, he wasnt 100% sure or convinced.

falcor is 3 months old, and weighs 105 grams and 13 inches long, is this a good healthy weight?

she is still eating great, lots of veggies and worms.

i feed her phoenix & silk worms with the occasional 'treat' worm.

she eats tons of salads. with all of this do i need to dust the worms with calcium or vitamins, being this food already has those nutrients in there?

oh, and she just shed again, she's growing so fast...she's grown 3 inches since i've had her!!!!!

one thing i've noticed is, (this may not be a bad thing not sure), she seems to tucker-tire out quickly, i think this is only because she still little yet though.
there is a fake tree plant at the top of my stairs, so i let her climb-jump her way up the stairs, and she RUNS like a little cheetah to the tree, then climbs it...its amazing how strong the little thing is, and how she pulls herself upwards!!!! so, i'm guessing this is a big workout for the little girl! after she gets to the top of the tree, she gives me this look...and i know she wants to cuddle and relax in her blanket :) she is so fun and such a little sweetie.
thats pretty much our daily routine, no, she's not spoiled one bit LOL !!!!

another thing, she won't poop in her cage unless she absolutely has to LOL!!!!!
she will always, right on schedule, poop on my table, or during bathtime!!!! arrrgghhhh!!! is this ok, to have the phobia of pooping in ones own cage?? LOL
although, i think she's a smart little dragon...why poop and dirty up your own home, when theres somewhere else to poop and someone to clean it up for you? LOL!! sneaky little beardies........

i'm going to take some pics of her climbing the stairs and in the tree, its just too cute and fun!!! :blob5:

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
