Having Cats and Beardies

I live in a relatively small 2 bedroom apartment, and I've been considering getting a cat. I've never had one though, so there's a lot I don't know about them - I only have experience with friends' cats. One of my main concerns, though, is that the cat will go after Pushkin - or perhaps worse, knock over his lights and get hurt or create a fire hazard.
I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons of getting a cat (it'd be fun to have one, and I'm used to having dogs around - I just don't want to deal with walking a dog and keeping it in my small apartment without a yard).

Any experience or thoughts you can offer about having cats, particularly with beardies around, would be really helpful!

There are many who keep cats and dragons successfully. There have been some horror stories, as well. Personally I would not, for exactly the reasons you mentioned. Others will chime in, I'm sure.

Thanks, I appreciate your candor! A number of people that I have asked have been cat lovers, so to them, cats are all pros, no cons. That's why I figured I should ask here - I'm not sold on the idea (and would be just as happy getting another beardie!) and I figured people here would know the concerns of keeping cats around beardies.

I have two cats, who I had long before I got my bearded dragon. They are both around 6 years old, but still huge brats and get into lots of trouble. So far things have been okay but I definitely worry about horrible things happening. I never have Phoenix out without also having all three under extreme supervision. My cats like to chew things like cords and shoelaces and I believe that beardie tails would be of similar temptation. One cat tried to pounce on Phoenix when she was a baby and leapt off the couch but luckily I intervened and no one was hurt. The cats are also prone to wanting inside and on top of the cage, although now that its on a table rather than the floor, it's not as bad. I haven't had any problems with knocking lights over but they do bump into the heat lamp and slide it around sometimes.

I love both of my cats dearly and I wouldn't trade them for anything but I do feel like I have to be more vigilant about the safety of Phoenix. Especially when she is out and regarding the sturdiness of her enclosure. So its possible, you just need to know your cat(s) and take extra care when it comes to safety.

Thank you, that's really helpful. Those are the things I was worried about - chewing on cords, chasing him, knocking things over. I may just get another beardie instead :p (my apartment has a 2 pet limit!)

It would really depend on the cat's personality. I have no problem letting my cat near my beardie, but she is scared of everything so it's not a big deal lol, of course I still watch them.

I have two cats that are 7 and 9 years old. I also have two beardies with no issues. My younger cat is more interested in my leopard gecko since it's smaller.

My cats and beardies know each other and I monitor the interaction between them. One of my cats sniffed one of my beardies and in return he licked her on the nose. It was sooo cute!

On the other hand my dog sniffed my beardie and didn't like his texture and ran off in fright and doesn't want anything to do with him again!

It really, reeaaallly depends on both the personality of both the cat and the beardie. I am a cat person, but I have both extremes of the cat spectrum living in my home so I can offer both points of view.

My beardie, Diesel, is pretty chill and generally fearless (so far). Never bearded or hissed, always moves in a calm, slow and controlled manner around the cats. He is a year old. We have 2 cats in the house. The first, Sasha, is 9 years old and has always been a very laid back and well behaved cat. Doesn't scratch stuff, waits to be invited up before jumping on stuff, comes to her name (??????? I don't know either), takes baths with relative dignity and grace for a cat (warbles in misery but makes no move to get away), has chewed some headphone cables I left right in front of her but nothing else, is there waiting for me at the stairs after work, and loves snuggles (if I try to pull away from a belly scratch she'll gently grab my hand with both paws and pull it back). She is my cat, and she has been introduced to Diesel in a controlled manner. She does not jump on the top of his cage, mess with the cables or lights, and other than jumping up and hitting the glass front of his viv once during the first week I had my beardie (presumably to try and get a reaction out of Diesel, of which there was none), she has posed no threat. I often have both her and Diesel on my bed with me at night while I relax, and she watches him in interest but makes no threatening movement towards him. She laid down beside him once and fell asleep, that's about it :p. She's a good cat and her and Diesel have very similar personalities so there's no conflict.

Now then, the 2nd cat. Her name is Lucy. She makes bird noises, rolls all over the place, scratches up everything, climbs in the Christmas tree, is always underfoot, eats all her food, all the dogs food, all Sasha's food when she gets at it, tore my back and arms to shreds last time she had a bath, will claw you if she's tired of being pet, and tries to bolt when doors open. 1 1/2 years old and probably should be renamed Lucifer. She is my sisters cat, and she is a terror for other animals. She jumps all over Diesels tank, knocks over lights, and ominously stalks around his tank. When I have Diesel out the does that predatory stalk thing cats do and tries to bat at him and nip him. I keep a very close watch on her, and she is never allowed in the room if I can help it. The same behaviors she shows with Diesel also extend to Sasha (who is 1. much older 2. twice her size and three times her weight 3. The established alpha mammal in the house) so I've come to the conclusion she just has tons of attitude. Diesel maintains his fearless exterior around her, but does get faint stress marks when she starts stalking him and lowers his head. He actively sought to get closer to me once when Lucy got particularly frisky. Because of Lucy's personality, I keep her as far away from Diesel and Sasha as possible because her... rambunctiousness stresses both of them out.

In summary, I don't really have issues with my cats and my beardie, but I keep a close watch on them when they're together and lock the problem cat out of Diesels room.

What sort of enclosure do you have? I've heard a few sad stories about cats falling through screen lids, opening drawers to snake racks, attacking herps when they are out of the cage... but responsible keeping can basically eliminate these.

We have one cat and he has been fine with both dragons I've had. I don't trust them alone together, or even out of arms reach together, but I wouldn't let one keep me from getting the other. Our cat doesn't chew cords at all, but gets on lots of stuff, he also knocks stuff over in the process of getting on stuff. I have a solid cage for the dragon, but we make sure all the other cages (we have 3 screen tops) are out of reach of the cat either physically or with decorative barriers - otherwise I know he'd spend all day sitting on them. That's true for anything though, not just critter homes.

I have 2 cats both a year old. I keep my BD in the basement where the cats aren't allowed to go unless I am supervising. You can have a cat if you can keep the room closed off for the safety of your BD and apartment. My friend had a reptile room with over 8 tanks and his kids, dog, cat and wife aren't allowed in without him there. FYI there is no stand big enough to keep out of reach from any cat once they get older. I see tons of pics where cats sit on too of the tank screen. Bad idea. Stress for BD and fire hazard.

I have three cats. Two of them are very sweet but still will go after my beardie on sight as I've tested in a controlled situation just to see what happend. The third cat is nice also but is a trouble maker and I knew she would hurt him. So I close my bedroom door because one time she got ontop of his cage tring to get him and did knock his basking bulb off. So I would definatly keep your dragon closed up away from cats. Unless it's just a nice calm cat that you know want hurt he or she. But I'd be weary we all know cats.

They don't seem to notice each other all that much. :)

They say guns and small children don't do well together but if you're responsible you can make it work. Cats and reptiles can work if we as the owners do what we have to do.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
