So, I have used both, and it's definitely true that halogen flood lamps are VASTLY superior. I'm using a Phillips halogen flood that I got from Home Depot for $7, and not only does it give me higher basking temps than a 100 watt zoo med bulb, but it doesn't heat the fixture as much. It actually gives extremely high basking temps, so good thing I picked up the dimmer, or I'd have temps of 120. I now have it paired with a 100 watt Megaray, since the Megaray was giving me a grand temperature of 91 degrees. Together they make a fine couple though.
