I have an odd issue at the moment. I set up this WONDERFUL terrarium, I'm SUPER pleased with it. Lots of plants, a waterfall, and even an underground den! I am very pleased and can't wait to get a garter snake for it! So what's the problem?

Well I did have my eye on this albino checkered garter at the pet store, but it just kills me to buy from a pet store instead of adopting. So just adopt right? For the first time ever, I CAN'T find an animal that is available for adoption! Kind of a good problem, I suppose. :)

I adopted my dog last September from a kill shelter and he is SO GREAT. Now I just want to rescue every animal I see. I have this great setup just specifically for a garter snake, but no snake to put in it! Drats!

So as an aside, anyone know a garter snake up for adoption? I live in Miami, FL. (Living on this darn peninsula limits the number of adoptables around me too!) But I checked petfinder and didn't see a single garter listed in the entire country (or Canada, for that matter!)

EDIT: here are some pics

To the lower left is an underground den of sorts. To the right and back is a waterfall. (Tried to make a DIY one, but it had rather disastrous results. lol)

You see a snake you like...you take it. It doesnt matter if its in a pound, your toilet, a pet store, or any other place imaginable. If you like it, get it.

Only if you like it...if not, just flush again

Looking for a specific rescue snake may take some waiting. But Florida is one of the more reptile-oriented states.

Contact all veterinary clinics, shelters, and animal controls in your area and let them know that you are looking to adopt a garter snake. Snakes often turn up in these places but must be moved due to most peoples' inability to care for reptiles. But if they know to call you if they get any garters in, you've got a much better chance. Craigslist is another place to keep an eye on; maybe you could post wanted ads.

I'm with you; buying from a pet store just doesn't feel right. If you can't find any adoptions in your area, it's far better to purchase from a breeder than from a pet store. Also check Kingsnake and Fauna Classifieds. I think you can find just about any sort of reptile on Fauna. (I spend waaay too much time browsing on Fauna! Even thought I don't have the room for another animal right now, I can't help daydreaming about every pretty snake ad I find! :p)

Good luck! The viv looks awesome! I'm sure your garter will love it. :D

hey thanks herpfreak, that was more the kind of reply i was hoping for. Yes its quite picky to want to adopt a garter snake, you are right, but I agree that it just makes me feel bad to get any animal unless its through adoption. I only think about how many other animals there are that need homes. (I think I may be becoming one of "those crazy animal people" haha

Lol I am completely with you! I've done a lot of Humane Society volunteering, and it's just heartbreaking how many homeless babies are out there! I would totally take them all home if I could. :D
