gravel paper?

I refer to the stuff made for birds. Has anyone ever tried using this as a substrate? Do you think it would be safe? I've been switching out reptile carpet for paper towel when it gets dirty, but he tears up the paper towel in seconds and likes to eat it. I'm looking for a good alternative and am very anti reptile sand. Also his nails are slicing the **** out of me and I thought perhaps the gravel paper would help with that.

I haven't used gravel paper, but if the nails are bugging you I suggest using ceramic tile. It is cheap, can be cut to size, is easy to clean, and keeps the nails filed down really well.
