Ok so after a ton of research i got all my supplies for my new sub adult dragon

10 gallon tank.

45 watt bulb for basking.

vita sand.

repti glo UVB,tho i live in a hot state so i might not add any uvb and allow him/her to bask outside in the sun for 15 mins daily.

and ordered 2000 mealworms for him =)

Woahh dear, you definitely need to read more on here before you set this up! You definitely do NOT want sand in an enclosure, too many risks for impaction! You can put down paper towels(I found this easy to clean, just replace the layer), or ceramic tiles(they keep heat in better).

Sub adult? In a 10 gallon? I don't think so. You can't get a good enough temperature gradient in this teeny tank, you can start with a 20g long though, but beardies grow so quickly! It would actually be best to get the 40g breeder right away.

Mealworms are a big no-no! Impaction to the max! Crickets, phoenix worms, silkworms, and waxworms are good.

And the UVB is the MOST important part. ReptiGlo is known to cause problems in beardies, particularly in their eyes. Get a ReptiSUN 10.0 bulb, the LONG kind, preferably 24 inches.

Also, make sure you get a digital thermometer with a probe to be able to correctly set up temperatures.

Sorry if this ruins your plan, but really, we only want the best for your new friend!

Hi RB1....so exciting to get a new beardie ! I must say though, I agree with pretty much all of Carmell's advice . The tank for a sub -adult [ a sub-adult can grow 3- 5 inches or more in a few months !] should be a 40 breeder size. Newspaper is fine for the floor....vita sand is a gamble as to whether or not the dragon will lick it accidentally or not, causing possible impaction. As for UVB, if you can actually get the dragon outside for 30 -45 minutes a day, or 4-5 hours a week, you don't have to worry about a UVB bulb. But .....you STILL need a bright white heat bulb. This can be a common house bulb, about 100 watt in a aluminum reflector will provide a good hot spot. You have to be sure to check the temps. though....especially if you have a smaller tank, go with a smaller bulb. But a 10 gal. tank is not even sufficient for a baby, because you can't get a good temp. gradient. In other words, it's not big enough to provide a hot side and a cool side. Depending on how big the dragon is, superworms are fine as part of the diet. I give them to my 14+ inch dragons, but until they are closer to 16". they get only medium supers. You'll also want to feed greens.

So you'd rather listen to your friends that will also have sickly dragons than the hundreds of people on here that actually care about their animals? You seem like the type to just have a lizard for the sake of having one. An adult in a 10 gallon is like you in a large box. They need a cool side and hot side, something you can't get in a smaller tank. I hope I never have to see a post from you in the Beardie ER section.

If you really cared, you'd make changes. Goodbye!

Please wait to get the dragon until you can provide everything the little one will need. I have cried a river of tears over seeing the damage improper care can cause. I've watched twisted little bodies struggle to move, thanks to MBD, and seen dragons so week from lack of proper food that they can't support their own heads. Unhealthy dragons get to be given up on, by those who never cared, then those of us who do give a damn, spend our hard earned money on vet bills trying to fix what can never be put back right. Please think of the Bearded Dragon before yourself. You'll be all it has.
(Can someone please send RB1 some links of dragons who were not well cared for?) Maybe seeing will be believing. I hope.

Ehhh I was kinda thinking you were trolling here since if u really did your research you would realize that everyone trying to help you is correct and that your set up will not be good (potentially deadly)for your pet. I feel bad for your beardie if you don't plan on taking the advice you are being given on this site.

Troll?

Surely a person wouldn't post saying how they are doing everything wrong, while claiming it was all right?

This has to be a joke.... don't feed into the people who want to cause trouble. Moderators should just ban people like this because it's obviously just to start trouble.

Taking a look at his previous posts. He know perfectly well the suitable size for an enclosure and says he feeds crickets many times. Just looking to rile everyone up, hopefully he'll outgrow it eventually.

Seems to just be trolling the forum, looking to rile people up. Going to report the thread in hopes to get the mods attention to this person.

Since the OP is already set in the way his/her beardie should be housed, there's no reason to keep this thread open to invite more negativity.

RB1 - If you wish, you may start a new thread under Introductions when your beardie arrives.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!

Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
