Got an MVB and deep dome fixture - slight problem...

Ok, so I too followed everyone's advice on here and imported an expensive MVB bulb from California (I'm in Canada!!). I also bought a deep dome fixture for it, it's black with a ceramic base, with the standard long black cord and easy on/off switch.
So far I'm very happy with the results, my beardie's colour looks gorgeous and cirus-y for the first time months.. his appetite and energy seem a *bit* better, but it's not a crazy difference or anything.
My one concern is this - I have the cord plugged into an extension cord which is plugged into the wall. Every time I touch the black cord, even super gently, the light shorts out and I can't turn it on again for ten minutes... !!!! .... I can touch the on/off switch just fine, but just barely a touch on the lower part of the cord and the light goes out... I'm worried that my cats will brush past it during the day and the light'll be out all day while I'm at work!!!! Is this a defect? Has anyone else had this problem? COuld it be because I have it plugged into an extension cord and not directly into the wall?

Any help would be appreciated. Thx.

Try plugging it in directly to the wall and see what it does? Sometimes the gauges of the extensions need to be a bit bigger than what is on the lighting end. Is the dome light new or used. If you've had it and had the same setup and all you did was change the bulb than it could be the bulb. The dome light might not be rated for lets say more than 75 watts. With a 100 it would draw more power making the dome a bit unsafe but meaning you would probably need to get a thinker gauge extension. And need to get a dome rated a bit higher. Probably bulb if it does it plugged into the wall. Another way to test the dome would be to leave it the way it is and put a regular bulb in there and see if anything changes. Hope some of this helps :)

I am also in Canada - not sure where you are but im in Ontario and there are 2 reptile stores here and both carry the mega ray bulbs 100w and 160w .... let me know if you needed another one as it would likely be alot cheaper here then all the way from CA!

Anyways I have both a 100w and a 160w and both of them turn off when i switch the off/on buttom and once i remember moving the cord on one of them and it did the same thing - shut off.
I think they cant come right back on because they get very hot and this is maybe a safety thing that they dont turn back on until they cool off slightly?

I know have mine on astand so not they never have to be touched - only night and morning.

they are iffy and dont like to be touched. however if they are bumped and they turn off, the bulbs will turn back on when they cool enough. if this is good for the bulb, i have no idea. . .
