On the afternoon of Wednesday October 14, a week after going to the vet and getting a clean bill of health, Gork showed visible signs of pain. He kept doing a weird hiccuping action and showed aggressive behaviour. Leaving him alone after trying to see what was wrong, he started spinning around in circles and then stopped as his body contorted backward, bending himself in a U shape as his eyes rolled into the back of his head. I picked him up and he was stuck in that position for about 10 seconds before going limp. I thought I'd lost him.
He was in fact alive, though severely weakened and lying flat and completely expanding his belly. I called my girlfriend, who assisted me in insulating a carrier in a backpack and caught a bus, and then called a cab, taking him to the Veterinary Hospital. The vet told me that it seemed like signs of MBD, but it doesn't make sense to him how it could occur so quickly....
Just the day before Gork showed no signs of sickness; he ate all his greens and insects quite enthusiastically. He stayed overnight at the vet and appears much better now, though it's clear he's still recovering. I took him home Thursday morning. He's on calcium supplement and antibiotics while I wait for the fecal sample to return to see if the problem lies there, which I'm almost sure it does. Initiating a fecal test was the reason I took him to the vet last week in the first place. The vets are almost hoping there's some kind of infection there, such as a deficiency due to parasitic infection, because otherwise they don't really know what the problem is.
I've never been more concerned in all my life...but it seems the worst is over and he is on his way to recovery. I just hope we find the problem so we can correct it.
