Hey guys, can anyone tell me a good place to buy slate tiles in the states? I'm in Buffalo, NY and want to get everything set before I get a beardie. How much does slate tile cost? I know I'll have to measure the inside of his viv and leave a bit of room to be able to remove and insert the tiles. I'm probably going to use that non-skid shelf liner underneath the tiles so they don't slide. Any input would be greatly appreciated

Just call beforehand and make sure their tile cutter is working, I had to go to four Lowe's to find one with a working tile cutter.

would it be okay if I used slate tile on 1/2 of the tank and repti carpet on the other half?

Yeah that would be fine. It's just that with two different substrates, it would be more maintenance but it's whatever you prefer :)
At Lowes they cut the tiles for free as li ng as the tiles are coming from them.
Home Depot doesnt cut.

so should I be looking for granite or slate? I want something that's not porous so that it doesn't hold the pee and other fluids and is easy to clean yet rough enough to help keep his nails worn down

Slate is 100 percent natural. it is rougher and uneven, it has good traction for the Beardies and helps keep the nails down. I spot treat the tiles which is easy with a tiny bit of vinger and scrub over the spot with water until it doesn't sound like vinegar. I didn't end up getting tile with the same feel as granite because my Beardies slide around on my kitchen floor and counters. If they dont have good traction, then you can assume that their nails aren't getting filed well (if at all) . And slate looks very natural and feels natural. I think a Beardie would appreciate some traction but that's just my opinion. :)
Slate is messy when they cut it because it does come right out of the Earth, so if thats the route you go be sure to grab some plastic before running out the door to set it in your car ;)
be sure to measure well. I got 6 pieces cut to size but had to go back and have it re-cut because my measurements were off. (them re-cutting wasnt a problem btw)
I can post a picture our tile later today if you would like?

His viv isn't done yet. I've been working on a project for him lately.
I posted it for the purpose of showing the tile.
A little bit at a time for me :)

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
