My Darling Pico 9/12/03-7/21/12
By Pamela Drake
The date was October 24th, twenty thousand and eleven
I was introduced to the world of Beardie Heaven.
My hubby found a gift on Craig’s List for his wife
That was how my darling Pico came into my life.
I knew nothing about Beardie Care,
I read everything that was out there…
I quickly learned his sand and purple night light,
Were NOT the ways to house a Beardie right.
I went out and bought UVB lighting and tiles for the tank floor.
A basking bulb, hammock, calcium powder and so much more.
My Pico and I bonded from the second we met,
When he looked into my eyes, I knew he was the perfect pet.
Whenever I felt anxious, distraught or sad
He comforted me with the special way he had,
He cuddled up against my cheek and neck oh so tight,
Then he would “pet” my face, so soft and light.
He was potty trained to go, at the end of his bath, in his tub,
Then he would jump in the sink and wait for a rinse and a towel rub.
He loved going for rides in the car, watching YouTube Beardie videos and TV
After he spent his required time under UVB/heat, he just wanted to be with me.
We’d walk around the yard and he’d sit in the garden watching me weed
He had a way of communicating his every want and need
Opening his mouth and licking his lips meant “ I want a drink”,
Having to potty was signified by scratching the cupboard under the sink.
He knew that mommy kept his glass tub in there,
Of not pottying on the floor, he was very aware.
I don’t know how many owners came before me,
But I do know he ended up in the home that was meant to be.
He suffered UVB deficiency and some other bad things in his past,
Lost toe, inches gone from his tail, scars…with me he was safe at last.
He enhanced my life and soul in so many ways,
I looked forward to coming home to his smile on rough days.
He taught me not to freak out if a cricket got loose in the house,
He’d calmly sit there then nab it like a cat does a mouse.
Pico, my patient, loving, funny precious little baby.
I promise to be with you again someday, that is not a maybe.
Please keep a lookout for me at Heaven’s Gate,
To see and hold you again will be great!
I felt so helpless watching you dying in my arms the other night,
Nothing saved you, not medicine, TLC, prayers, and extra doses of natural light.
God wanted you home and I had no say….
I thank Him for the time I had you, each and every day.
You stole my heart my sweet, little cuddle bug guy
Your memory will be with me till I too die.
July 21, two thousand twelve you left this plane
But the love you shared will never be in vain.
Thank you for being the best present I ever received,
You shattered thoughts about lizards other perceived.
You taught them there was nothing to fear,
So many people loved you and held you dear.
Yes dear Pico, you opened the Beardie door wide,
You crossed over with little baby Beardie Tango by your side,
He now has another tiny Beardie rescue pal to love and enjoy
We named him Chico, after you & Chica my dear boy.
