I hope to never have to order these nasty creatures again, but I am interested in how they raise them.

From Ghann's web site:
So, if you're interested in seeing how a few hundred million crickets a year are produced, packaged and sold - not to mention over a hundred tons of Cricketpoo (yes, it's just what you're thinking), tune in to see Ghann's Crickets on Dirty Jobs on the Discovery Channel on Tuesday Jan 12, 9:00p ET.
And the following Tuesday (Jan 19, 2010) their mealworm operation will be featured in a smaller segment following the main episode. More information here:

yep yep.. i saw it to.. Was interesting how they raise them. I always thought they sort or sift them through a screen to get the correct size.

LOL, Str3tch. It was a bad day. I had just picked up some nasty dead ones -- one looked like it had been chewed and the other had a bubble of blood coming out of it's back. Yuck! I had plenty of protein for them, so I don't know what happened. Especially after getting Dubias, I got tired of cleaning up their poop, the dead ones and the body parts. Have you ever kept 500 or 1,000 crickets before?

I have no problem with Ghann's, so don't take it to mean that I thought they were nasty or their crickets were nastier than any other cricket. If I ever have to order crickets again, I wouldn't hesitate to order from them.

I finally watched the show Saturday night with my kids. It was really interesting, and not at all what I imagined. For one, it was much cleaner!

STR3TCH420 - I've gotten 2 shipments from Ghann's so far. My first was for 500 and my second (just this past Tues) was for 1,000. So far I've been very pleased with them. The crickets are very well packaged and I've had minimal deaths in my shipments. When you get your shipment you'll most likely have a box inside a box. The 2nd box with the screen ventilation is where the crickets are. Just cut the tape, put them in your bin upside down for a few minutes and let them come out. After a few minutes goes by you can pull out the eggcrates, then wait a few more minutes and just start banging the box to get the stragglers out.

I don't think crickets are as bad as some people make them out to be. Granted I'm new to this so I don't have the years - or even months - experience under my belt, but so far I'm fine with them. As long as you provide plenty of climbing spots so they're not constantly walking all over each other and you do frequent cleanings you should have good results with minimal smell and deaths.

In case you're interested, here's a photo of my cricket bin. I stand the egg crates up vertically and just this last week I taped a piece of twine along one of the sides to keep the paper tubes standing vertical. The crickets seem happy in this set up and they're doing great! :)

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
