Slate is just a rock cut into a tile size. Just remember with darker colors it will get hotter. Think black car with rolled up windows in 100 degree heat its like 130 degrees inside the car. I paid like 1.84 per 12x12 tile at home depot.

i was just looking on Lowes site, they have slate that's not black (natural tannish stone color) for like $0.67 for 6" squares, ofr $1.somethin for 12" squares, i think i'll be choosing that

i got 2 large 12x12 slate tiles in the middle of the viv with ceramic tiles all around the edges, large enough area to trim the nails, but not so much that itll make my tank hotter.

I have ceramic slate tile left over from my kitchen. Was thinking of laying this in Jasmine's habitat. Was wondering if you should grout it or just fit it tight and leave it so you can remove it for cleaning? Any ideas?

you can go either way. if you grout, you will have to seal the grout because its porous and will stain unless you use an epoxy grout.

I personally like to leave them loose fitting. I can easily change them in the future. The downside is if he poops on the seam, you will have to lift the tile to clean under.

it's really a personal preference

yeah, I was thinking about having them nice and loose, so it's easier to clean. So much awesome information! thank all!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
