getting rid of coccodia in subtrate

Hello,

So my beardie was diagnosed with coccodia parasite, and my vet suggested i change the entire subtrate and clean all decor with boiling water. However, i use bioactive subtrate, with about 60 galons of soil and would hate to have to change it all. So im asking if it would be possible to get rid of coccodia eggs by removing only the first few inches of soil. And if it is possible for coccodia eggs to 'travel' from underground to surface?

Any advice would be helpful.

Thank you

Hi there, is your dragon acting sickly, being affected by the coccidia ? Also, what is the count ? If it's a low count and your dragon is not ill many vets wouldn't bother treating it, beardies can naturally care low levels of parasites + bacteria in their gut.

She is acting lethargic, mostly staying either in her hide or on top of it, on the cool side. Also her apetite went down, stopped eating veggies completly, also little interes in crickets/roaches
Dont know excatly the count, but they said it is very high and needs to be treated.

What meds. will be given ? Some vets are using Albon which is very harsh but the newer + better med. that is not harsh and only takes a 2-3 dosing is toltrazuril. You can get it here, complete with dosing info.

I guess you'll have to determine whether you'll change the substrate. You might try sprinkling powdered ginger on the soil, it kills pretty much everything but I don't know how effective it would be in a large quantity of soil. I would just treat her + see how she does from there. How big/old is she ?

I belive the toltrazuril will be given. They said i have to give it 4 times/1 each day of 1cc.

Is there a way to determine if soil is infected? Also is ginger harmful for my beardie? She is almost 2 years old

Glad to hear that it's toltrazuril ! You might be able to have the vet test the soil for coccidia. And ginger won't harm her, if she licked any of it she would get a pungent taste and probably shake her head, like a child eating a lemon or something too spicy or bitter.

Only solution is get rid entirely of the substrate as it's impossible to sterilize effectively, the eggs are extremely hard to kill and even harder to remove from sand / soil . The dragon will be continually infested for as long as you keep the existing substrate.

How long has she been in that set up and what are the temps. throughout the tank ? Is there more than one basking/heat bulb ? If it's too cool through most of her enclosure it will lower her immune system and make her more susceptible to health issues.

About 8 months now.
Her temp is over 32 C on her basking side. Only 1 basking spot.

O.K., that temp. is too low. Get it up to about 38- 40 celsius ASAP. She should perk up just from the warmer temp.

38 on her basking spot or the overall Hot side?

On the basking spot, then it gets gradually cooler as you move away, down to 90 in some spots, 80 at the " cool" end, 75 is O.K too. Different zones throughout the tank is what to aim for.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
