Gem (and MoMo): I'm gonna be a big sister (again) and news

Hello, everyone! Some of you know my Gem from her ER thread, but if you don't, you will soon. :D

Gematria was a rescue (I definitely consider her one) that I found on Craigslist. After e-mailing the owner, I got an (obviously out-of-date) photograph of a healthy-looking but obviously annoyed dragon.
IM000132.jpg

So, we went to meet the owner. After examining the dragon, I couldn't see anything that couldn't be fixed immediately. But, after interrogating the owner (who, mind you, thought she was in perfect health) we learned that she'd been put on sand and eating bugs from OUTSIDE. I knew that I had to take her home, so I paid the guy the $100 for her and all her stuff.

Upon arriving home, I did a quick inventory.

- 1 55 gallon tank, complete with poo and sand. Nice.
- 1 heat rock (threw that away....)
- 1 water dish, complete with algae! and a water pump to make it bubble. (That thing was caked with algae)
- 1 food dish, complete with dried poo and carrots (yummy)
- 1 hide, which was way too small
- 1 light fixture with a blown bulb (useful)
- 2 UVB fixtures, with the glass still over the bulb, and a bulb that put out 2% UVB (also useful)
- 2 thermometers, one a stick-on that doesn't work, the other so caked with sand and dirt that I had to throw it away because the buttons wouldn't push and it was trying to tell me my room was 34*F

Then there's the dragon herself. Obviously female, but she'd never been handled or bathed, and had obvious MBD. After removing some yellow scab substance from her mouth, I found two sores on the inside of her lip. I knew that she had to have parasites, considering her conditions. She definitely wasn't underweight, at least. I also found a large lump on her right ankle which we haven't identified yet.

We made her a vet appointment (for 3:00 today) and tried to treat what we could. I put Hibiclens (which is like Betadine) on her mouth sores, got some babyfood into her, and wrapped her in a towel.

She was vicious, gaping at everything and anything, hissing, trying to bite, bearding, the whole 9 yards. However, as I type, two days after buying her, she sits in my lap in her 'security towel' (she freaks if she's completely exposed to the air). She has learned to tolerate me after I talked and read to her (yes, read to her).

Since she had no name before, I decided to call her Gematria, or Gem. Her head is simply beautiful, yellow with orange and red in the beard, with golden eyes. The rest of her is grey, but that will change in time, I'm sure.

Soon, we'll be headed out for the vet.
I will definitely post updates on that.

Ok, so, here are the zoo pics, almost a week later than I promised, as is my wont. Please excuse my random pictures of fish. They varied greatly in size and color so I had to take pics of them. I especially enjoyed the one where the fish is kissing the metal.

That's my little brother Fredrick's white-blonde head, along with some lady who decided to get in my way for the sheer fun of it.

Ok, I still don't know what kind of birds these are. Someone kindly ripped off the nameplate. Can someone enlighten me?

Instead of dogpiling, I do believe they're lizard-piling. (Insert sympathetic laugh for cheesy joke here)

Ok, it had some complex name that started with a 'T' which completely slipped my mind once I left the reptile house. GRRR!

Electric Eel

Of course, they had absolutely no bearded dragons. I will never understand zoo people and why they don't include beardies. *sigh*

And here's a random pic of an emu I took at the local petting zoo that I thought you guys would enjoy.

O.K., Jacqui, what was that lizard that looked like an adult beardie in the pic that's between the snake head and the turtle? It looked like a beardie, but you said that place didn't have any beardies. I'm glad that they don't as most places like that (from what I've read) don't know how to care for beardies correctly.

Hey guys! Amazingly, I took those pics from my phone. Glad you enjoyed them.

Barb.... I have been home for 2 weeks now. MoMo and Gem are doing well and I will get pics of them up soon. As stated before, my sister did a poor job of caring for them so I have to get them fecals or I will die from anxiety.

Aimee.... HI! :D

Beardieparents.... nah it wasn't a beardie. It was smaller, plumper, and sat still until I pulled out my phone. I could get a good pic! I saw 2 beardies at the Baltimore Aquarium, and Baltimore is smaller than San Antonio.... but oh well. I would rather see no beardies than neglected ones.

In other news, I am famous! I was on the front page of the paper recently for donating my essay contest winnings to a Pro-Life organization. Everyone keeps saying they saw me in the paper. Haha

Sorry to hear sis didn't meet the standards. :(

I bet those beardie snuggles feel good though. :)

Those were good pic's for a camera phone. :D

Hey guys.

Well, I don't know how to begin. I'm confused and I'm full of doubt and just downright depressed (been struggling with that again *sigh* ). But it's come to my attention that MoMo is not being properly cared for. And I'm wondering if maybe I should consider finding a temporary home for her until we get things sorted out.

I love MoMo. Everyone knows that. She was my first baby after Reggie passed, and she provided so much comfort. I really don't know if I seriously want to give her up, for any stretch of time. But I can't let my own selfishness get in the way of her wellbeing. My mother assures me that our financial situation will get better soon, but every day, MoMo is suffering.

She is underweight, and small for her age (a mixture of genetics and my problems with being unable to afford bugs sometimes). I would prefer to give her to someone nearby, and wouldn't want to ship. I want her to be with someone who has maybe had a beardie before or has one or two others.

Please remember that I'm NOT SURE if I really mean it about rehoming her. I have been rather 'down' lately, and it could be that shining through. Plus I'm rather selfish. :| But, if you think you can give MoMo a good, loving home for the moment, PM me. I'm open to questions.

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles, too, Jacqui. Maybe you could foster her out for a few months? If finances are that tight? I know what it's like to feel the pinch...it's hateful. I hope you don't have to give her away. Keep us all posted and good luck.

Take care,
Deb

Oh Jacqui, I am so sorry to hear you are feeling down and you might have to rehome your little MoMo. :(
I know that feeders can be very expensive. What feeders are your girls eating? Do they eat supers at all? Supers make a great staple feeder and if bought in bulk are quite inexpensive. They are very easy to keep and last for months as well.
Keep your chin up sweetie and keep us updated.
((hugs))

Hey guys.

I think I have this sorted out. My father is willing to give me money for lights and fixtures, as long as I am ok with skipping grade money for my first report card. Which is fine by me! He also offered a home for MoMo if things get really bad, which is a huge relief! He has reptile vets galore and has been browsing the forums for quite some time. Hopefully I won't have to resort to that. I would like to keep my baby....

Dawn.... supers are not an option with me, sadly. Gem gets impacted and they are too big for micro-MoMo. I have been feeding Rusty Reds from TheBugPros.com However my mother forbids roaches and doesn't know that is what they are, so I have to use my prepaid Visa to buy them so she doesn't figure it out. Bad news is, I am broke! She and I are going to have a very serious talk about bugs.

I went couch cushion digging and managed to come up with a couple bucks, so I am going to head down to the pet shop and see how many crix I can get.

Hopefully things will start looking up. It has to get worse before it gets better, right...?

Jacqui I'm so glad to hear that your dad is willing to help you out...hopefully things will look up from here.
I also hope that you have already seen the worse and are on the up rise now.

Hugs!

Hi Jacqui,

I pm'ed you with a little bit with my experience in having some of my beardies fostered, and hope you do not have to foster MoMo (although my recommendation for finding someone like Christy :notworthy: stands!) It is cool that your dad is willing to help out, and it sounds like he may be your best bet if you absolutely have to foster her. It is wonderful that he has started learning more about his scaly grandkids! :laughing6:

I am still job hunting here, so I know how tough things are for so many people. I started babysitting for neighbors when I was 14, (way toooo many years ago) is something like that a possibility? The Red Cross offered a class and certification then for "Good Emergency Mothers" and my Camp Fire Girls troop all took the classes, and got certified. I got a good reputation as very reliable and good with the kids, and had money all through high school with what I made sitting for several families, and could do school work when the kids were in bed or napping. I hope your family's situation improves quickly.

(((Hugs))) and good wishes for you and all your family,
MaryAnn

I also PM'ed you Jacqui...I hope this all passes quickly for you.
An I too hope you don't have to resort to rehoming MoMo with your dad.
I found that when I've rehomed adult beardies in the past that I'd had for a long time...I felt very very guilty.
I know you don't have much choice in the matter and that you are trying to do what is best for your babies, but for some reason I felt like I'd let mine down. It took me a year...I finally had gotten back Itty Bitty, but I cried all the time because I felt guilty...So for you I hope you don't have to rehome anyone.

Hugs and Prayers!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
