Gem (and MoMo): I'm gonna be a big sister (again) and news

Hello, everyone! Some of you know my Gem from her ER thread, but if you don't, you will soon. :D

Gematria was a rescue (I definitely consider her one) that I found on Craigslist. After e-mailing the owner, I got an (obviously out-of-date) photograph of a healthy-looking but obviously annoyed dragon.
IM000132.jpg

So, we went to meet the owner. After examining the dragon, I couldn't see anything that couldn't be fixed immediately. But, after interrogating the owner (who, mind you, thought she was in perfect health) we learned that she'd been put on sand and eating bugs from OUTSIDE. I knew that I had to take her home, so I paid the guy the $100 for her and all her stuff.

Upon arriving home, I did a quick inventory.

- 1 55 gallon tank, complete with poo and sand. Nice.
- 1 heat rock (threw that away....)
- 1 water dish, complete with algae! and a water pump to make it bubble. (That thing was caked with algae)
- 1 food dish, complete with dried poo and carrots (yummy)
- 1 hide, which was way too small
- 1 light fixture with a blown bulb (useful)
- 2 UVB fixtures, with the glass still over the bulb, and a bulb that put out 2% UVB (also useful)
- 2 thermometers, one a stick-on that doesn't work, the other so caked with sand and dirt that I had to throw it away because the buttons wouldn't push and it was trying to tell me my room was 34*F

Then there's the dragon herself. Obviously female, but she'd never been handled or bathed, and had obvious MBD. After removing some yellow scab substance from her mouth, I found two sores on the inside of her lip. I knew that she had to have parasites, considering her conditions. She definitely wasn't underweight, at least. I also found a large lump on her right ankle which we haven't identified yet.

We made her a vet appointment (for 3:00 today) and tried to treat what we could. I put Hibiclens (which is like Betadine) on her mouth sores, got some babyfood into her, and wrapped her in a towel.

She was vicious, gaping at everything and anything, hissing, trying to bite, bearding, the whole 9 yards. However, as I type, two days after buying her, she sits in my lap in her 'security towel' (she freaks if she's completely exposed to the air). She has learned to tolerate me after I talked and read to her (yes, read to her).

Since she had no name before, I decided to call her Gematria, or Gem. Her head is simply beautiful, yellow with orange and red in the beard, with golden eyes. The rest of her is grey, but that will change in time, I'm sure.

Jacqui020.jpg

Soon, we'll be headed out for the vet.
I will definitely post updates on that.

Hi again, guys.... Ahhh, Friday morning. Fridays are good.

MoMo

She is the reason behind the title!
MoMo has been waving and bobbing constantly lately. She'll just sit there-- and I'll watch-- and wave her arms, one after another. She also had her first headbob yesterday! Hmm. Isn't she a bit young for these things?
I wonder what causes beardies to wave and bob? What tells them that waving and bobbing is a beardie thing? Is it just pure instinct, and they hardly know they're doing it?
Sorry. I'm a curious kind of person.
MoMo JUST woke up, and ate, and is now basking. Wonderful little girl. :blob8:

Gem

Gem's been an active not-so-little one. She hasn't been eating any more greens (neither has MoMo-- then again, we have no collards) but she's been running around my room and getting into stuff. Somehow she got into my still-unpacked suitcase and burrowed into the clothes, and went to sleep last night! Silly girl. She's still sleeping. Hmm. I should wake her up. She likes to sleep late! Lazy girl.

I e-mailed the guy who sold her to me recently, just to let him know how she's doing, although he probably could care less. I didn't mention her problems or what he did wrong-- I just told him what I'd named her, how social she was now, and how she loved to explore out of the viv. Then I thanked him for selling her to me. If he's going to reply, he hasn't done it yet.

Miss Gem loves waxworms.

----

I thought I lost the e-mail address of the woman who sold me MoMo (I erased my inbox, as it was too cluttered), but then I had a sudden stroke of genius and checked my Sent folder. I really am a blonde.

Also, there's a building a few blocks away from my house that used to be a market where you could buy candy for $.25 a bag, we used to love it there. Well, it's for sale. And.... my family wants to open a vegetarian grocery store, as I'm a vegetarian and all. :D That would be awesome, as people drive 2 hours to go to a vegetarian store!

Well. That's my update for the morning.

Where shall we start?
Let's change things up and start with Gem today!

She has nom'd about a whole head of lettuce, collards, and some clover in the past 2 days. I actually look at her and yell, "GEM! Holy crow, calm down!" But, at least she's getting some veggies in her!

Hi Jacqui...

Momo and Gem look just fab! I can't get over how big MoMo looks already....how long is she now?
That was a cute pic of her looking at her little cousin Bligg...awww!

You are lucky that Miss Gem likes her veggies. Rex could care less if she ever saw another collard green or sliver of squash again.
I swear the older she gets the pickier she is about her food.

Thanks for all the great photos! :D

Ech.

I'm not doing well today. Missing Reggie. Neither Gem nor MoMo are anything like my little man.

Anyway. *puts happy face on*

MoMo

Is mad, because she's out of crickets. "Salad?! What?! But.... but.... where are the crix?!" Don't get me wrong, she's been eating the heck out of the salad, but she keeps looking at me like "Grr. Crickets, woman, get me some." She's also very defensive of her salad. She'll attack a piece of lettuce, keep it in her mouth, and beard the PowerSun like "IT'S MINE!!!"

That's right.
She puffs up her little, nonexistant beard.
And she bobs.
And she waves.

I've found she does this when she's hungry.

Oh, yeah.
She jumped on my face last night.
I was going to give her a kiss and she JUMPED ON MY NOSE. I was surprised, yes. But what did I expect?

Gem

Gem has gone on a hunger strike. :|
She's also mad because I can't take her to the Farmer's Market. I wants to. But my stepfather said I can't. Eh.

She still hasn't peeled her shed. :| How long is it gonna take?! Maybe because she ran out of calcium, and hasn't been getting any? Does calcium contribute to shed?

Not much else to report.

Jacqui.
Sigh.

Hi Jacqui, *hugs* from California. I hope your day gets better! Sounds weird but I miss Reggie, too. How can I miss him when I never got to snuggle him? :dontknow: I miss reading about his antics and what a good beardie he was and how much he loved you! Do you have a copy of the paper that he made it into? Maybe someday Gem and Momo will hear that story and be proud of their dearly departed uncle.

As for Gem and Momo....

If I lived like 2700 miles closer I would probably bring you crix and calcium, but as it is, I fear that's not possible. Why couldn't you run out when I was in Mass? Oh yeah I didn't have a computer there anyway. AND then I'd probably scheme 'we're just going to the park' and take you and Gem everywhere you wanted to go, and then you'd probably get in trouble, oh I fear I would be a terrible influence if I lived closer to you! Get this... we took our 4 nieces and nephews camping, their first camping trip, last year. Their dad (my hubby's bro) yelled at the 3 biggest ones (the youngest one is only 4) when we got home because they told him we let them drink COKE  (oh no not the evil coca-cola!) when they KNOW THEY ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO DRINK CAFFEINE!! I was like, dude, they were with me, trust me caffeine does not stay in your system for a week, leave your kids alone. Plus they told him we all built a dam in a creek and we let them say damn alot. Ya know, 'hand me that dam rock!' 'How much dam fun r u having?' And they got in trouble for that  . So now when I do nice stuff for them or have lotsa fun with them I tell them not to tell their dad which is probably not a good influential thing for an auntie to do, ya think? Oh well, he's a single dad w/ 4 kids and I digress.

Momo,I know you get online and will read this, be nice to Jacqui, the crickets will be there when they get there!!! Good job guarding your salad, it's very valuable. Many smallish beardies do not appreciate their salads so much!

Gem, someday Jacqui will have the freedom to take you ANYWHERE you want but in the meanwhile you have to accept that she is limited by the larger humans, and eat so you will have strength for those excursions later!!! I bet you're all itchy from your skin, that will pass, be nice to Jacqui as she saved you and has given you a better home than lots of beardies have! There are starving beardies in the world that would trade places with you in an instant, you know... (an argument that never worked on me when I was a child but we are creatures of habit aren't we? at least I didn't say starving beardies in China lol)

*more hugs*

Hi Jacqui-

I'm sorry you are missing Reggie today. I know how hard it must be for you.

As far as Gem, considering her age, her sheds will take longer. And since she wasn't cared for properly, she may have several layers of shed to get rid of. I know Dude is still getting rid of old stuff and I have had him since April.

Just keep bathing her and maybe add some aloe vera to her scales. That should help it along. I don't think the lack of calcium would affect it much. Calcium is much more for the bones than the skin.

Try to have a good day Sweetie - and when you're thinking of Reggie - HAPPY THOUGHTS

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
