So, a few months back i bought 25 waxworms. Since their treats, i still had about 20 a few days later i went to give my loves a couple and they were all cacooned (spellcheck lol) so i thought, i dont want to waste them, so ill give breeding them a shot. 2 weeks or so later i noticed a moth, and within 2 more days there was about 10. Well, problem was, the petstore that i bought them from had them in shavings, and told me to do the same, and this was my first time buying them so i had no idea if that was the right way to keep them, until i googed how to breed them and it said use bran and honey. At this point i had moths and couldnt replace the shavings without them flying away, and was worried i would mess up the eggs, so i kind of threw the bran/honey mixture on top with the wax paper and quickly closed the container. Its one of those plastic pet containers with the colored top that has the small pop up entrance. A couple weeks later all the moths had died but nothing was happening. I kept checking everyday, until one day i noticed teeny tiny worms on the side of the container. They were about half the sizd of an eyelash, very small. So i put stockings over the top because the were climbing to the top. As soon as i put the stockings on, one slid right through. So, i put another stocking on and waited. I saw them for a few days, then it seemed like everytime i looked, i saw less. I only ever saw maybe10-15. So, this was probably around Christmas, maybe even before. I checked everyday and eventually just stopped seeing them. I had them under the bottom of my one beardies tank stand, on the floor under the roach bin. I guess i forgot about them, and didnt remember until last week. I checked last week and still didnt see any, but it looked like the bran was starting to mold. My boyfriend kept making fun of me for holding out hope, and i kind of was too. I thoughtthey had all just gotten through the stockings or just died and were too small for me to see. So for the last time i stuck them back under and said i would clean it out soon and try again. So, today i picked up some more, made the bran mixture (last time i think i used too much honey and it was extremely gooey and sticky, so i thought maybe they couldnt move either, got stuck and died) went to get the container and started to clean it out and saw a HUGE, fast waxworm. The biggest one ive ever seen, it was definetly over an inch and fat as anything. I was like YES, even though theres only one soul survivor, i still did it! Well, since it had been so long, all the mixture kind of formed into a bunch of small balls that looked like they were covered in mold. I broke one open just to be sure, and sure enough, there was about 10 in the first one i opened, about the size of a maggot. It wasnt mold, but whatever it is that they spin. There was about 10 balls, and everyone i opened had about 10 in it, ranging in size from a strawberry seed all the way to a large adult cricket. They were all inside the balls, in the middle of the bedding and all these weeks ive never seen them. Now i have over 100 waxworms that i dont know what to do with. At first i thought id just keep breeding, but in one cycle i have this many so that would be wayyy too many. Im just going to keep the big ones cool while the small ones grow and feed the large ones.

How ironic?

Sorry its sucha long story, but i had to share! It cracked me right up. Im also in the process of breeding supers, and they have been in the beetle stage for about 2 weeks, but the waxworm situation was discouraging me since i thought it was sucess when i saw babies, then thought it was an epic fail when i didnt see them anymore, so now i feel more open minded that it will work!
I also have dubias ive been trying to breed, but made the dumb mistake when i bought my first 100 of getting them the appropriate size for my girl to eat, which was i think 3/4" at that time, instead of adults back in october, and they justtttt matured a couple weeks ago. I think im doing everyting right (heat, humidity, darkness, egg crates, big plastic sterilite container) but havent gotten results yet. I dont remember how long it said it could take, since i did all the research back in october, but i think theres something im missing so i have to re read up on breeding them again. I thought i remember somthing about the male to female ratio being a factor, but my girl wont eat adults and my boys too small, so im not sure how to accomplish that. I dont want to kill them or waste them. So if im correct with the female ratio needing to be higher, i will give whoever wants them a bunch of adult male dubias!!! Lol

I doubt anyone even made it this far, but im done rambling now! Lol

I made it! A testimonial to patience.:)

Edit: I was just going over this thread and noticed how rude my comment sounded.
It was a testimonial to YOUR patience in waiting for them to grow, not to my patience for reading through.
It was an interesting read. Apologies for being a ditz.

That's pretty amazing.  How interesting! And to think you could have thrown them away at any given point, and never known that you had waxies in there. Cool story!

LOL!!! You must be patient!! Haha

Shanny, Boss and Lo are going to be extremely happy now, because the petstore that sells them is 45 min away, so I only go maybe once a month to grab some of them and hornies, but Boss isn't a fan of the hornworms so I've been going even less, but he LOVES waxies. I wish they weren't so fatty because if he could eat them as a staple, he would eat SO much more! Lol. When I give him reptis, at first he thinks it's a wax and RUNS over to the bowl, but when he takes his first bite he kinda looks at me with the stink eye like "these are NOT wax worms woman!" and walks away. If it was a bowl of wax, they'd be gone in a matter of seconds! Lol. He also refuses to eat crix.

Spoiled brat.

Yeah 15% fat stinks. Funny thing, our Maya doesn't like worms much at all, even waxies. But she LOVES crickets. Go figure.

I have an idea for you on the repti-worms...it's just an idea to get him to eat them so sorry if you think it is a bad idea. I am always trying to think creatively and sometimes my ideas get shot down. LOL!!! Anyhow, repti-worms are really hardy little larvae. You can feed them in your small bowl and mix a teeny bit of chicken or turkey baby food into the worms. They will wriggle in it and have a freaking field day, and your dragon will most likely be drawn to eating them. I haven't tried this yet but with Maya I was thinking about it. When I do try it, I will just do it with a small number of worms in case it does kill them, but I don't think it will. When my dragons poop in the repti bowl they wriggle in it all day until I come home from work, and they are happy and alive, and poopy. LOL!!! If he still doesn't eat them by the end of the day, put them in a mesh kitchen strainer and rinse the baby food off so it doesn't spoil in the viv with those temps. You can dry them off with a paper towel. They don't drown easily, so no worries. :D

Hmm, I think that's a good idea. You mean babyfood or actual chicken? Boss loves babyfood so that might work. Once he realizes he's not getting waxworms he will eat them, it just takes a bit. Lo is the same way, she would prefer a cricket over a worm any day. She does like horns, and it's better to only have to hand feed one big horn verse 40 crickets, but she loves her crix. She doesn't go crazy fr wax either, but does eat them. I keep trying to put those and reptis in her greens, but they all end up in the bottom of the bowl and I'm afraid they'll drown so I put them in a separate bowl. Sneaky little things though, I mist them halfway through the day just to be safe and when their wet they crawl right out of the bowl and those things are FAST! And these waxworms I bred, holy cow they can move. It's crazy the difference of petstore and home grown! Lol!

I'm always looking for new feeding tactics, since Lola is spoiled rotten and refuses to eat anyway but handfed. It's kind of annoying having two dragons that have completely opposite preferences!! I have so many bugs in the house just to be able to give them what they each like, it's crazy.

Dragons...can't live with them, definetly can't live without them :)

Oh! I meant chicken or turkey baby food. I'll go back and edit that post so it makes sense. LOL Sometimes it's hard to explain what I am trying to say...DUH.

We have 6 dragons and yes they are all so different that it is just ridiculous. As kids you know our parents would make us eat our food before we left the table, but scaly friends just don't work the same way....HAHAHA.

I'm so intrigued about your waxie experience. We also have moths in cheap plastic pitchers in a dark place - had to evict some of our video games out of our entertainment system so we would have a good dark place for them. Jeez what we do for our dragons...! :silent: :D

Omg if you would have told me a couple years ago that I'd be breeding roaches, wax worms, super worms, well I wouldn't even know what a wax or super worm was, and definetly did not think I'd be sharing a room with 100+ roaches, I would have told you youve lost your mind.

Oh yeah same here. If you would have told me a year ago that I would fall asleep with a lizard on my chest I would have laughed and laughed. :D

Very cool. Glad I read that. My days when I feel a bit discouraged about my superworm colony it's good to hear things like this. Patience definitely pays off.

Okay guys, now this is crazy....

So, ya know how I said I've had a Dubia colony I've been trying to breed since OCTOBER, but they were too small and matured a few weeks ago. I clean their bin out every 3 days and replace the carrots an greens, but usually open it up and just check it everyday. Did my rounds tonight and moved on to the roach bin. I have 8 of the small dozen egg crates stacked vertically so the poop falls to the bottom of the bin. So I start knocking them off of the first 7 crates and get to the last one all the way to the left of the bin.....

WOULD YOU FREAKING BELIEVE THERES AT LEAST 100 NYMPHS ON THE LAST CRATE!!

I literally did a double take because I've literally checked it everyday since October, but never took any males out so I kinda figured the males were eating the babies.

So, I SCREAMED for my boyfriend, who ran upstairs like I was in labor or something, out of breath like "what what what's wrong?!?!". I said I DID IT I DID IT I DID IT!!!
Needless to say, he was nowhere near as excited as I was, but I was like get the %#*$?! out of here, 2 days ago I had a 6 month old roach bin and waxworms container and now I have endless buggies feed. I've been so anxious because Boss LOVES LOVES LOVES dubias, but they were way too big for him and I fed off all the appropriate sized ones within the first coule days he was here. I grabbed one and went to Boss' cage and was like LOOK BUDDY!!! ROACHES YAYYYY! I don't even think he was excited as I am!!!!!

LOL, now that's IRONIC!!!!!!!!

This is me ----> :blob5: :blob5: :blob5: :blob5:

WOOOOHOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

Weeeeee doooooooo! Some people would say there is something wrong with us, but I think it's more like there is something RIGHT with us. :blob5: :blob5: :blob5:

When we have friends over I have to tell them don't throw trash in THAT trash can - it's full of crickets. LOL!! I forgot to tell a guy last month and he opened it and was like WHAAA???? LOL!!!!!!!!!! And our fridge has mini mealworms (for the anoles), and waxies....we are just ate up with bugs and worms.

I wouldn't change it - it seems normal to me.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
