We have a young beardie about a year old and he has these growths on his skin. Orion was injured when he was a baby. He was attacked by another beardie in transport to a Petco and lost a good portion of his upper jaw. Petco got him to a vet and he was treated for mouth rot with some very strong anti-biotics. A month later, Orion's skin started turning yellow, especially around his vent area. From there it spread quickly over his entire body.
We took him to our vet and she told us it was Yellow Fungus. In Orion's case the anti-biotics he was given was killing all the bacteria in his system. Not just the bad bacteria but the good as well. We came to the conclusion that it's a beardie form of a yeast infection. All the good bacteria in his stomach was being eliminated along with the bad and allowing the yeast to run rampant.
Tracie suggested the best thing, Betadine soaks. Get an old toothbrush to scrub the scales. As a topical after his
bath you can use Silver Sulfadiazine cream. Again, use the toothbrush to work it into the scales.
Stay away from Itraconisol. It's a powerful anti-biotic but the side effects are to harsh. Very little is known if the Itraconisol works 100% but it did seem to help the fungus on Orion but the side effects on his liver & kidneys have taken their toll on him.
Today Orion is approaching the end. He has problems with his mouth, eyes, breathing and the fungus. He has become very still, doesn't open his eyes. Not eating. We know his time is coming soon, probably this coming Monday. It breaks our hearts but we have to do what is humane for him.
Yellow fungus takes a long time to beat. Even if your dragons loses those growths on his skin, continue to treat with the betadine for at least a month. You want to be sure the fungus is completely gone. Also, a pro-biotic will help as well. Acidophiliz+ from Pet Authority seems to do a good job. You can get it from reptilesupply.com.
Good luck with your beardie. From the pics, it looks as though you may have caught it early enough that he will beat it. All the best, Robert - Las Vegas, NV.
