Full body twitching/trembling...Mbd or Hypothiaminosis?

A friend randomly contacted me yesterday saying she had a bearded dragon and knew I rescued them, and she was worried about hers.

I went to her house and see a small guy laying on the bottom of the cage, every muscle in his body spasming and twitching. She said that she had just noticed it. I talked her into letting me take him home so that I can try to save him.

Here is what I know:
They got him at the pet store as a baby, have had him nearly a year. He is the size of a juvenile.

He has been in a ten gallon tank until recently moved to a 20 gallon.

Never had uvb, only a tube florescent for light and a heat pad.

Coconut fiber and wood chips for substrate.

Fed lettuce daily, calcium dusted crickets every three days. Recently introduced to large mealworms.

I am taking him to the vet on Monday regardless of what she says, if I have to pay that's fine. Until then I'm on my own. He is obviously depleted on calcium, but what are the chances he is also b1 deficient? This is the worst case of malnutrition/neglect I've had, I'm asking for any help or advice, please.

This is what I've done so far:

Cleaned and set up a 40 gallon with paper towel and carpet.

Mercury vapor bulb, basking temp between 100-105. Ceramic heater at night keeping him 75-80 degrees.

Given him 2 drops of liquid multivitamin, dropper full of acidophiliz

Mixed up a concoction of calcium, a little pysillium, and reptistart in a liquid of electrolytes. I've been dropping that on his nose and he's been licking it off. He has gotten probably a half tsp in him so far.

I am offered phoenix worms, dubia, red runners, and a few freshly molten supers. I also made a salad with collard, mustard, and turnip greens.

He has not eaten yet, I'm not sure if he understands these new bugs are food. Last night he was trembling all over. This morning he was not trembling at all until I put him under the light and he started to warn up. He is trembling but not to the severity that he was yesterday.

Is there anything more I can do? Should I try and get b1 in his system too? Should I limit his food intake so not to shock his system?

Poor little thing....can you post a picture ? If it's pretty small + so sickly a vet probably can't even draw blood to be tested. The dragon may recover but will never be very healthy. You're doing well, what can reasonably be done from the description of it's condition. As long as he's not emaciated you can offer a few small soft insects, but if he's not up for them you can offer baby food chicken, squash, green bean with the supplements mixed in. Calcium + vit. B are probably a good choice for him.

With that sort of neglect (no UV, improper heat and caging, deficient diet) I doubt you are facing a single deficiency. Sometimes these situations sound a lot worse than they are but personally I would work with a good and reputable reptile vet to asses his condition (and potential suffering), get him stabilized and on a diet plan to avoid potential re-feeding syndrome.

Hello,

Poor guy! That is most definitely neglect. I agree, he most like has several deficiencies & is stunted on his growth.
I would have the vet give a calcium booster, some fluids but no meds as he is too dehydrated to get anything like that into his system. I think you are doing all that you can for him. Start slowly with the protein & focus on rehydration therapy using water, greens blended, etc for him. Be sure his kidneys are functioning before giving too much protein, too.

I hope that he makes a recovery for you. At least now, he has a chance.

Here is a short video I took the night I brought him home (Friday night)

UPDATE: He is no longer trembling. He is a bit more active, but mostly because he is scared of people and will waddle-run to the other end of the tank if something I do spooks him. She did get him a year ago she thought, so he is probably around 13-14 months old. He weighs just under 100g :(

I have not gotten him to eat yet, but he is used to eating every 3 days so that doesn't surprise me. I will start slowly with protein. Several times a day he will drink some of my mix, which is just calcium in pedialyte, with a sprinkle of bee pollen and liquid multivitamin mixed in. I just ordered some calcium glubionate and liquid b complex from beardeddragon.co Do you think that will be ok?

That looks like the tremors that accompany low calcium so the calcium you've given him + the good UVB lighting very probably have already helped him out. Use the baby food I mentioned or the smoothie with greens for about a week....he should poo by then and you can still offer the small or freshly shed bugs. He's thin + small for his age but not emaciated. The calcium is fine, Pedialyte is O.K but be careful with the mulivitamin, just use it 2X a week to be sure he doesn't get too much.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
