We have had our very young bearded dragon for almost a month now. When we bought him, he was shedding, and still seems to be shedding.
He had been being fed crickets at the pet store. When we brought him home, he continued to eat crickets, and a lot of them. Everything was going well until.. he just stopped eating crickets. He will take greens, but barely any at all. I understand that young beardies are supposed to be eating lots of live feeders/protein due to their rapid growth at this age. I'm concerned because it seems that he has become generally disinterested in the crickets. Tried the roaches- he could care less about those too. I was thinking that he wasn't eating due to shedding, but he will eat mealworms, but those are supposedly bad for him, so I've stopped feeding him those as well.
I've brought this up before on the forum, and others here have suggested we feed him the reptiworms/soldier fly larvae. Honestly- I am worried about getting him started on those for fear that he will continue to only take these as they are similar to the mealworms which he now prefers. The reason why I'm worried about this is that these worms are expensive. Sure, now he'll probably eat 10 or so per day, which is roughly $10/month which is not bad, but when he gets older and begins eating much more of these (I'm guessing 50-60 worms per day), I'm looking at feeding him 1500 or so of these pricey grubs per month, and I just don't want to spend that kind of money on feeding him. I'd like to raise feeders (crickets or roaches) because I honestly think the money spent on insects to feed reptiles from retail suppliers is just ridiculous.
We've tried squeezing cricket guts onto his lips to get him to lick his lips and trick him into eating the cricket, which worked for about 2 days, but he's keen to this now and is no longer cooperating.
Does anyone have any suggestions here? I'm worried he is not getting the amount of food he needs at such a young age, but I don't want to be stuck spending so much money on grubs.
Thanks Everyone
