Frozen Foods

I was wondering, a lot of the veggies and the like that I can get available come in packs and are never, ever entirely used before they need to be binned, it's really costing a bomb for all this stuff to go to waste. I've been swaying over the past few months on buying the packs of kale and rocket etc and then putting in the freezer.

I'm aware that the only real nutritional source lost in freezing is Thiamine and wondering if there is anyway that I can replace that. Someone mentioned Brewers yeast would be fine but I'm apprehensive to just start peppering yeast and the like everywhere without checking more.

Has anyone ever frozen foods for their weirded bearded, any tips?

Really you only need to supplement thiamine if the salad is consisting mainly of frozen vegies. If its just like one frozen veggie and the rest are all fresh, I don't think you really need to worry about it.

Personally, I don't use frozen foods for my dragons just so I don't have to worry about it. As long as its not a common thing for you to be feeding frozen, I don't think you really need to worry about it.

If, you are going to be feeding primarily frozen (which I don't suggest), you can Buy B1 pill tablets, crush them, and put a small pinch on the salad.

Leafy greens really don't hold up well in the freezer. They turn into mush. I've started just eating a lot of greens, so I'll buy turnip and collard greens at the beginning of the week and steam them with onions and garlic and sometimes pepper or whatever and put it over brown rice. Then over the course of the week I can eat that, stir fry it, add egg or other ingredients, and it keeps me from wasting greens. It is also healthy and tasty.

Have a look for "grow your own" - it'll certainly stay fresher for longer! :D
As a treat, my guys adore frozen baby carrots once they're defrosted and lightly cooked.

No tips, but I sympathise. Especially since Dexter is still a baby, he hardly makes a dent. Luckily I have a guinea pig that helps pick up some of the slack, but Im still throwing out more veggies then I would like to. I wish the stores sold the greens in smaller bunches.

I often saute escarole in a little of bit of olive oil and butter with some Italian sausages and garlic and onion and then add a bit of chicken broth (or water) and let that mixture heat through and come to a boil; and then finish it off with grated parmasan cheeze on top... Serve that with a Italian bread; it's delicious. You can do that with collard green and mustard, too. although, I steam the collard green until it is very soft before sauteing it.

For winter squash. I steam them in the microwave until they are soft and dice them into small cubes; then I stir fry it in garlic and soy sauce...and then add some undercooked scrambled eggs and chicken broth (or water) into the pan and let it come to boil to finished cooking... I serve that with brown or white rice. It's delicious!

I agree w/ atlas on the greens, they will get soggy and smell when defrosted. Beans and butternut squash can be frozen in water, when thawed they are good to go. Having a victory garden in the yard if you can swing it really helps.

Luckily my crew LOVE they're salad! My middle "Childs" middle name is Groceries. She puts away some food! When shes dont she'll look at me and then her empty bowl. Kinda like "How dare you let me get empty!".

I had a SPECTACULAR face-palm moment when I read Paradon's recipe suggestions. My first thought was "WOW. That's heckuva length to go to for your dragon dinners!" and my second thought was "Hmm, garlic and onion would be really bad for them..."

I often use baby leaf spinach - it's good for people as well as tasty dragon greens - spinach goes awesome in all kinds of things, especially with ricotta and pasta, or in quiches.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
