Hola - My name's Erin and I live in New Mexico, and I just got my first baby Bearded Dragon about 3 days ago.
I traded one of my Ball pythons for him on Friday, and so far he seems pretty active and healthy ( Watching him eat crix is like watching a game of PAC-MAN ). He's about 6 inches long.
However, This is what I'm keeping him in :
I'm currently keeping him in a 40 gallon aquarium, it's bow-fronted so I don't have a top. But as you can imagine the sides are pretty high so there's no chance of him getting out.
I have a 100 Watt Basking Bulb and two Sun-Glo 18 inch tubes in order to keep the temperatures high enough for him to digest his food ( 100 degrees )
I have three temperature gauges - one on the coolest side of the aquarium (stick on), one on the other side of the tank ( stick on ), and one in the middle ( round gauge with a needle.. thing. You know. )
The coolest end during the day is usually around 85 degrees..
He's got a medium sized rock under the basking bulb, a shallow water dish nearby, his small veggie and bearded-dragon dry food dishes, and a half-log hideout on the cooler end of the tank.
His substrate is ZooMed desert sand - I wanted to get the same type of sand that him and his siblings were on at the local pet store - and he apparently likes to dig in it.
I've read many Bearded Dragon sites and they say that sand is a NO-NO for 6 inch dragons. But I'm confused, how come Pete's Pets said he'd be fine 'cause he's used to being on sand?
Isn't sand natural for them?
I'm worried about Impaction, but I don't see him licking the sand and he's pooping fine.
Anybody got any advice for me?
