So I had to return my Uromastyx...he was a PetSmart horror story. He got very lethargic and wouldn't eat, so I took him back. I didn't want to deal with a $400 vet bill on a Petsmart animal that was probably wild caught anyways. Hopefully he will be okay. I hate Petsmart and petco! NEVER AGAIN!

I got a new little guy this morning, he's exactly what I wanted. 2 Months old, 3 1/2 inches long, itty bitty witty teenie weenie! He was purchased from a breeder, which is what I should have done in the first place! Not sure what to name him...what do you all think?

HE'S SO SMALL!!!

Look at that wittle head! His brain is only like...the size of a MOLECULE!!

His first bask...it sure was cold in that little box he came in.

Here is a video of him eating his very first meal at his new home! HE WAS SO HUNGRY!!!

The first name that came to mind was "Snoopy". Not sure why though. Could be the way his face is shaped - reminded me of Snoopy's face.

Too bad the other Uro was lethargic and refused to eat. He probably wouldn't last very long at PetSmart.

Cute little bugger. So tiny. Good luck with him.

Yeah, i wish i could have kept the Petsmart guy, but i just don't have the cash to drop $400 on a lizard right now. I was stupid to get him anyways.

I will keep Snoopy in mind! It's an adorable name! Thanks Goonie!

Awwwwwwww now I want one!! I've done a bit of research on them...no where close to be able to get one...want to make sure we have the $$$, time, and knowledge for one. How are their temperments? Are they social like beardies? There is this one at the petsmart here it's a Juvie because he's quite large not like your little one that glass dances every time we see him. I would never get one from there but he's got a lot of personality, I was just wondering how they are being handled and whatnot.

Oh what a gorgeous little one.
Their heads look so noble, I think he should have a befitting name like:
Lance,
Squire,
Alaric - regal ruler.
Alwin - noble friend.

They are even MORE social than beardies. They are much more active, and they live longer. They are not nearly as stuck up and picky either. They are cheaper to care for because you dont have to deal with insects, they only eat greens and birdseed. So long as you can deal with the temperature gradients you should be fine. They need it at 115-120F on the hot side...its insane!!!

Not trying to put anybody off at all, but this was nowhere near my experience. I purchased a Mali Uro that never settled in, hid constantly, wanted nothing to do with me and would actually run and hide everytime I would see him out of his hides. I heavly researched them, so he was provided with a perfect set up and he did get a vet checkup so I am 100% sure that he was fine and I was doing right by him. Eventually, I could not deal with the fact that this animal seemingly was afraid of everything including me. He seemed to hate being in captivity, and yes, I am 100% sure he was not wild caught. I found out after purchase that you are not supposed to handle them much because it stresses them and their body temp will rapidly drop.

I am definately not saying this is the case with all Uros, just stating my experience. They all have different personalitys and I am sure there are some exceptions, but they are a little tricky and not for everyone. I ended up rehoming mine to somebody on this forum that was more prepared to deal with him. I just didn't want an animal that was not happy enough in my home to be social. It was a tough decision, but I felt wrong for even owning him. From now on I stick with beardys.

Anyway, like I said, not trying to be a downer, just offering the other side. Here is a pic of the little Mali (Boogie) he has a wonderful home now and is in very capable hands. He has been put in a quite, low activity room in his new home and as I understand it, he is doing very well.

Sblue, I am happy you found another uro. Don't blame you at all for not keeping the Petsmart one. They have absolutly no business selling anything like a uro anyways. In the little tanks that they have, the correct temp. gradiant would be impossible. Lucky little guy you have there, and very cute too!

That sucks that you got one that was so skittish. Usually the Mali's are the least skittish out of the 16 different breeds of Uro's. The breeders that I talked to used to breed beardies and both said that they prefer uro's because they are more friendly. But of course, there are definately gonna be some out there that are skittish and will never want to be held. I've even encountered people who've had beardies that were unhandleable (i know its not a word!! lol) But from what I've seen on youtube, and the breeders that i've talked to. They are supposed to be fine with handling. Either as good or better than a beardie. But like I said, and like Thor's Mom has shown, there's always a good bunch out there that are gonna be annoying, and unhandleable.

Mine keeps running away from me, but I don't blame him right now. Bowser did the same thing and she was about the same size as this Uro when I got her. It takes a while, and I KNOW it takes a long time to get uro's to stop being skittish. I've been hand feeding him whenever I hold him, so that he gets something good whenever the giant hand of eternal doom plows in to pick him up.

I've been dripping water on his nose...but he isn't drinking. Uromastyx usually have wrinkles. But yeah, he does look dehydrated doesn't he? Maybe i'll syringe him some water.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
