Fighting the Smell

Hi,

My two dragons are in my school classroom.

Everytime any one walks in, they make a face and complain about the smell. It's getting old!

The dragons are on tile, which is wiped clean whenever the dragons leave a deposit. but the complaints continue. I've tried wiping with a very dilute white vinegar solution, but that only makes the complaints worse!

My next thought is a spray bottle with a a few tablespoons of baking soda disolved in the water. This would fight the odor, but are there any health issues I'm not aware of?

Hello,
Beardie's poo doesn't generally smell very much. Personally I don't smell it at all unless I stick my nose right next to it, and even then it is very mild. Some people are more sensitive to it.
If people are noticing the smell when they walk in, it would have to be somewhat strong.
Have your dragons gotten a fecal done?
Smelly poo is usually a sign of parasites.
Also, do you have them housed together?
Other than the smell, is the poo runny or soft? Have you noticed any undigested plant/feeder particles in the poo?

I would suggest a fecal too. Poo smells, but it shouldn't smell bad enough to be making people complain.

Just a side note, housing two dragons together could be raising their stress levels, which would naturally lower their abilities to fight off bodily parasites, which would be causing stinky poo.

Yep, it's stinky. But if smell lingers after you think you've cleaned it up, then I suggest you consider the possibility that you haven't cleaned it up. It's a 2 stage process, you first have to clean off all the organic matter that you can see by physically removing it, then you have to sterilize everything that was exposed.
If things have not been thoroughly cleaned, and sterilized, early and often, the possibility of a burgeoning parasite load is something you can't ignore....

I have never had an animal that consumes meat, where the feces didn't stink significantly. That being said, it really should not be noticeable too far away from the enclosure. My lizard was getting pretty stinky. I cleaned the enclosure. Still had the lingering smell. Then, on a whim, I smelled the lizard. PEEEEWWWWwwweeeeee stinky! Got out the bath scrubbed him good. Been like 3 weeks and he still smells fine. Must have slept in fecal juice or something because yikes, it was bad.

All good now.

Poop still stinks tho... but he does eat meat so...

I must be the only one who doesn't think their poo smells.

Perhaps I have a bad sense of smell. Hmm.

My beardie's poo has increased in smell since I started feeding him Mustard Greens.

I keep a Scentsy (candle wax warmer) heating nice smelling candle wax next to his tank. It is more for me, as he poo smell makes me gag when I am cleaning it up, but I can't smell it out of the tank.

Collard greens makes my beardies poo STINK. Like bad. She is fine on mustard or turnip greens. Just something about them. I dont know. But I am also curious about home made cleaners. What do you guys use? Do you make your own?

I was thinking it was the Mustard Greens, because that is what has a strong odor when I take it out of bag, but actually I do give him collards at the same time.

I usually chop up mustard greens, collard greens, yellow squash, a little bit of Kale and a few green beans to make a salad.

I just use water to wipe mine down every couple days and of course I wash the reptile carpet in the washing machine with just water every time it gets poo on it.

I'm not a hundred percent sure, but I'm convinced Dilly is a farter! Sometimes when I give her a bath a mass bubbles comes from her rear end before she deposits any waste! And furthermore I have recently been feeding her some blueberries and pieces of mango and I swear its gotten stinker ever since! I've accepted it and I'm ever so scrubbing her debry! Gotta love em!

This is a family forum, So i'll try to put this as G-Rated as possible. I work in the Crime and Trauma Scene Aftermath Decontamination field.... We use 2 chemicals that help disinfect the areas we clean up and it actually smells pretty good. One is called Amdezyme and the other one is Relyon. You could probably do a search to see where to buy the chemicals for it at. Once you order the chemicals you pretty much just have to mix the right ratio of chemical to water, shake it really well, and spray it and wipe it and it should eliminate any smell. Or if you have the money to invest in it, I use them at work as well as have used them for personal use in the past, Look into getting an Air Purifier.

Forgot to add a piece of information to my previous response. Both relyon and amdezyme will help any disinfecting, just make sure you thoroughly clean the cages and make sure none of the cleaner is left in it, but in particular if your just looking for something to control the smell, You should also look into Odoban, Which is another popular item I use when I'm on a scene cleaning up. Anyway, I hope some of my information has helped!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
