I used to have a trio of ferrets. My last one had to be euthanized on Oct 27, 2007 because of health issues (she was 7.5 years old). Those of you who are familiar with ferrets knows how mischeivous they can be. They're curious beyond belief and will constantly put themselves in danger to check things out. Your house has to be ferret proofed to ensure their safety. They also poop a LOT and have a musky odor.
Anyway, the reason I'm writing this is because I'd like to your opinions on how owning a ferret is like (or not like) owning a beardie. Any thoughts are welcome, but below are my main questions.
1 - Ferrets poop a lot and it can smell pretty badly. I'm reading that most beardies will poop about once a day, but does it smell as bad a ferret's? Weird question I know, but I want a rough idea on what I'm getting into.
2 - Do beardies have an odor? I'm going to stay on top of the cage cleaning and bathing, but as an animal do they have a smell? Is it at all comparable to a ferret?
3 - Ferrets can be vocal as they hiss, grunt, and make those weird dooking noises. Do beardies make any noises other than hissing?
4 - Regarding house proofing. Are beardies as wreckless and curious as ferrets? I will always supervise my beardie while he's out loose, but do I need to go as overboard to beardie proof my house than I did with the ferrets?
PS. Don't worry, I'm NOT getting anymore ferrets so there's no risk at all with the two of them encountering each other.
