feeding veggies

Alright, before I ask my question, here is the background so that my question doesn't get answered with more questions... (although if more info is required I will be happy to answer)
so toothless is around 3-4 months old, we've had him for about 3 weeks now and he is doing great. He stopped eating for around 3 days when he was molting, other than that he eats 2-3 times a day. His staple is phoenix worms and I will be ordering some reptiworms to try as well. In the beginning I fed crickets, what a pain they were, although I still supplement with them occasionally when I can find crickets small enough. I did supplement his feeding with some mealworms the second week I had him. He didn't have any problems with the mealworms and I only fed 5-10 a day in addition to his daily phoenix worms but I am going to avoid them in the future.

Alright I also set a salad in his cage every morning. This week I have a mixture of collarad greens and escarole. Last week it was kale and collard greens and the week before it was kale and escarole. I top it with finely chopped up vegetables, I've used summer squash, zucchini, finely grated carrots, and bell pepper. I know too much carrot can be bad because of the high amount of vitamin A so I grate it and only sprinkle a little on top to brighten it up. However the only time I have seen him eat any salad is by accident when I put mealworms on the salad. If I try to put phoenix worms on the salad they bury themselves in it and he doesn't see them... crickets jump away, so the week when I fed mealworms was the only time he actually ate veggies. Oh and he did eat some veggies one day while I was at work and I forgot to give him any worms before I left for work, so all he had was salad out all day and my husband said he saw him eating it.

So sorry to be long winded, but my question is should I start trying to force him to eat salad by not feeding worms/crickets until later in the day???? Or maybe just do this 2-3 days a week where I leave salad out and don't feed any live food until the evening? I was reading one website that suggested around 6 months old to start skipping feeding live food for a day a week and only leaving greens out to try to get them hungry enough to eat the greens, but I want to make sure that this is alright.

**** reptisun 10 UVB strip light, basking light keeps basking area around 105 (103-108) during the day with infrared thermometer. cool side reads in the 80's, (usually readings from 83-88). My house is usually 76 at night. I take him out 3-4 days a week in the sunshine whenever I am outside with the kids. The kids and I handle him on a daily basis and I handle him every time I feed him live food as well. I also hand feed him when he will accept food from my fingers, but he won't take any fruits or veggies from my fingers, only worms.

Maybe you could try some mustard greens if you haven't yet. They are a little more leafy but have some crunch to them as well. Miss won't eat any type of veggie without them mixed in. I would also feed veggie scraps to your crickets the day before you give them, that way toothless is getting some of the nutrients from them.

I really wouldn't recommend backing off on the live feeds since toothless is a little one, but maybe you could give him a few less crickets (2-3 less) so he would be hungry enough to want the greens.

I very rarely feed crickets... I haven't fed any in at least a week because the pet store doesn't have any small enough. When I did buy them they were gut loaded and I fed them right after I bought them. In the begging I tried keeping a larger amount, they kept dying despite my best efforts, I had the egg crates, pieces of fresh apple and potatoe every day, a bowl of crushed cat food, and stems from greens, but I still had a large amount of die off.... and they smelled horrible and I really don't plan on keeping any at all. I will buy them at the petstore just enough to feed in one day occasionally but that is it. Otherwise it's going to be phoenix worms, and when he gets big enough I will supplement with superworms.

I guess I want to know at what age would it be best to start backing down on live food? 6 months? 8 months? I was thinking at around 6 months I would cut back to twice a day for the live feed and then once a day by 8 months? Does this sound ok?

I actually fed live food twice a day and left greens in 24/7 when Miss was 4 months old. Its what my work schedule allowed for. I still gave her all she wanted in 10-15 mins and she has been quite healthy and active. She is 7 mos old now and I still to the same.

Does she eat her greens at all? Do you ever skip a day or two of live feeding to try to encourage her to eat veggies?
On the days I work 12 hours I put worms in one dish and veggie in another before i i I make my mad dash out the door. I then feed worms again when I get home in the evening. On the days I am off I put veggie in the morning and feed worms later around noon again mid afternoon and a 3rd time in the evening.

I don't skip her on live food. I just give her greens first. I put them in before I start getting ready & about 20 mins before I leave I give the live food. I leave the greens in all day. She usually eats about 2-3 tblspoons of greens a day on average but sometimes more. There are weeks where she empties her dish. I think that's pretty good considering how much live food she eats in a day. She likes mustard greens & kale, collard greens if I mix them in with mustard greens, shredded carrot, & all peppers. Right now we are trying out yams. Haven't found a fruit yet that she'll eat. Miss just doesn't like them. I would just leave them in there like you have been & try different mixes. Maybe two different veggies at a time. You may want to give a couple worms to get the tummy growling but leave greens as the actual meal every couple of feeds until the greens are eaten a bit.

Invertebrates once to twice daily w/supplements every three days. Try and do your best to offer a variety. As for the greens offer daily. Once again variety is important try and make salad as nutritionally balanced as possibile by adding vegtables and small amount of calcium or multi vitamin. I would stick to this regiment until sexual maturity. If ur dragons eating more of one or the other try to balance things out with supplements. I feed my fussy dragons romaine in my experience it's the most palatable. Great idea with adding the worms to the salad. Good luck with ur dragon and don't worry, it's just a matter of time until he decides greens are delicious!

can any other users tell me what works for them?

In the morning when his lights come on at 10am I make him a mixed green salad of Bok Choy and either Collard Greens or Dandelion greens when they are in season like now. He also get another salad dish filled with Red pepper and turnip shavings. He will also get a small amount of fruit, either blueberries, strawberries, rasberries, honey dew melon or blackberries. Those items stay in his enclosure all day, they get misted a couple times a day to keep them fresh. Then around 1pm he will either get Superworms or Crickets. At 6pm he gets his second feeding of protein, either crickets or superworms. Once a week I will give him a few Butterworms or Silkworms as a treat. Those treat items will replace one of his protein meals of the day. At night he will get his bath at 9pm, cuddle time, playtime then back in his enclosure for 10pm lights out time and then he gets a fresh Bok Choy/Green salad to have for when he gets up at Midnight for his snack. Then the next day it starts all over again, I change the food he gets everyday to keep it interesting, so he never eats the same thing 2 days in a row.

My BD is about a month older than yours and about 2 weeks ago he started eating his greens everyday. Before that he just ignored them or barely had a bite every once in awhile. Now he eats almost a whole dish everyday. I have always fed him twice a day, so I feed him his live feed an hour or so after lights on, then I put his salad in and I leave it all day long. And then I feed him again at dinner time. He will go munch away on his salad numerous times a day. But this only started a few weeks ago. So, I'd just keep offering it, I would not cut down on his other food. Hopefully he will naturally start wanting it.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
