Hi My 3 month old has crickets twice a day and we put veggies out - only every other day though as we noticed he wasn't eating them if we put them out every day. I tried a variety but he basically likes squash and pea pods and that's it! Should he be having less live food and more veggies at his age?
Also I noticed this week he had smelly poo a couple of times which looked like he'd eaten some of his substrate..am hoping this was by accident! Will this harm him??
85 - 90 % live insect protein at 3 months old. As many as the hatchling will eat in 2 - 3 meals per day.
Peppa and Toothless (now 4 months old +/-) are putting away 15 1/3 sized crickets + 1 - 2 med (2-2.5" long) silkworms + some buk choi and grated carrot EACH per day, now taking 1 large silkworm rather than the mediums , per day EACH. Silkworm moths are very good food , as are bogon moths.
I'm out of medium and small silkworms now, so it's 15-20 1/3 sized crickets for each of them for their 1st meal , and 10 1/3 sized crickets each and their softened repcal juvenile and vetafarm lizard pellets mixed with grated carrot and cut up buk choi greens + some bigger pieces of buk choi greens in their 2nd (late afternoon) meal.
I've upped Peppa and Toothless from 1/3 to 2/3 sized crickets just the yesterday. So substitute that size where I indicate 1/3 sized crickets.
I rarely buy my crickets in tubs from petshops .... way too expensive and very poor quality control and very poor care given by the shop staff who don't bother feeding them or keeping their tubs clean.
If you must buy from pet shops, find out the day they get their insect delivery and be there as soon as possible after the new stock of insects has arrived and ask for FRESH stock. Local petshops get insect deliveries once a week.
