Hey saw a youtube video of a girl who put bunch of veggies and wheat bran and oat bran in a blender, mixed it up then froze it over night... I guess she lets them thaw out and put the cube in a tray inside the colony and they eat it up..

anyone else do anything like this? could you provide a recipe that has been working well for you so far?

thanks

Question.. They dont seem to want to go in the little cut out tin foil pie tins to get the food. Its fine for the dog food to put loose in the bottom but I have a concoction of yams, greens, carrots etc that I dont want laying on the rubbermaid bottom..,, are the roaches good at hunting out food when hungry? I feel they are all staying in their egg flats and not going to the other side to get the food.. they wont starve to death will they? when they get hungry they will go looking for food?

maybe a stupid question but to me its a good one..

thanks

They will come out of the egg flats to eat, usually after the cover is closed and they are not being disturbed. They do the same thing with me also, but when I check the fruits the next day, they are mostly gone. They won't starve, they just run for cover when disturbed.

ok so best way to avoid nats and flies are to only put the wet food in over night and take it out during the day. only leave dry dog food in there 24/7?

Is it normal to open the lid at any given moment on the dubia colony and rarely see any near the food? I have a heaping mix of yam, carrot, dog food, some greens and something else in front of their egg crates on the floor and then beside that mix I have a slice of naval orange. I just feel like none of them are coming down ever to get food and staying in their flats. the odd is walking around the bottom. I have maybe about 120-150 in there and only maybe 1 or 2 is near the food or around the perimiter on the opposite side of the heat and egg flats.

What I am doing is putting in the wet mix (ice cube thawed out) with the orange around 10 at night then take it out in the morning because i read they are nocturnal??? I dont want mold or fruit flies. but I have some dog food pellets in there all the time and some organic quick oats scattered about also.

sound ok?

Okay, a few things I am seeing that could cause a problem. How high protein is your dog food? I mix my roach cow as follows 50%cat food(higher protein than dog food), 30% dog food, 10% tropical fish flakes, and 10% honey nut cheerios. They seem to like the sweetness of the cheerios. Here is the important part though, I mix it up in the blender until it is a large grain POWDER, similar to the size of salt or sugar grains. Then I sprinkle all over the enclosure, even on the egg flats. I have a waxworm tub in there that have had the edges roughed up with sandpaper full of water crystals. THEY NEED THE CRYSTALS. It boosts humidity and keeps them from drowning when they drink. I find that even if you take out veg and fruit in the morning you can get a decent amount of fruit flies. So I only offer a quarter of an orange every three to four days and take it out after about 12-24 hours have passed. They usually eat most of it in this time frame. Is your enclosure see through or semi see through? My first rubbermaid was allllllmost see through, but enough light was getting through to REALLY bother them, so I switched to a black tub, and they have started eating and breeding like crazy. Do you have a heat source? The enclosure should ideally be between 85-90*F. Mine is between 80 and 90, depending on where in the enclosure the temp is read from. How are your egg flats set up? If they are not straight up and down(so the poo falls to the ground) It can stress the females into dropping their egg sacks. It also can make the culture smell a bit.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask any other questions you may have. :)

thanks..

Yes I have a 90-92 degree spot aimed at the egg flats. as you can see

I dont need too many flats because I only have about 100 or so roaches in there. You think there is too much open space between the flats and the food? need a smaller bin? that brown stuff the roaches are on is a blend of yams, greens, orange, dog food and something else I forget I put in there. I put that in during the evening and take it out in the morning so it doesnt get moldy. same with the orange slice. but I leave some dog pellets in there all the time and some BD pellets. oh and some Vector cereal pieces they may like (high in protein).

Here is a picture..

You're not going to get much movement with the lid being off. They hate light and normally only feed/do their business when its dark.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
