Hello, it has been a while since I posted. I got my first beardie in March and he is about 6 months now and more than 16 inches long! I need to keep taking pics of him but I have been busy. Will post later.
What is the toxicity of fake rocks? How do they stand up against the heat? What about a water-high humidity type enclosure for a tropical type... will these hold up and be safe? I am making an enclosure for a mountain horn lizard and I want to do it right the first time.
As for my beardie I want to make a vivarium, a living ecosystem. I know people debate about sand but I wont feed him in it...and the entire cage will not be sand, I will have a 'garden section' for the sand and plants. Does anyone have experience using real plants and what kind work best in this environment? How do you plant them?
What I already did:
I built him a custom cage months ago and it was my first project so I am eager to create a new one the right way. Currently I have a 4 ft long, 2 ft high and 20 inches deep tank made from birch wood and glass. glass is in front and on windows on sides. The tank opens from top like a chest. Note- I do not recommend the side-windows... they aren't necessary and I have one blocked with a scenery pic bc he gets overwhelmed from openings. Secondly I will not recommend opening from the top, sliding glass doors in front will be best.
I use pieces of tile on top of sticky vinyl tile flooring as a way to protect the wood. I clean with vinegar. I just recently added a sand box with a real cactus and a fake cactus and rocks to create a barrier between the sand and rest of cage. I have platforms screwed to the back but he is quickly out growing these.
For the next enclosure I will make as big as possible, not smaller than 4 ft long, 2 feet by 2 feet. I will probably make it larger though since i have the room.
I want to use real tile on the walls and probably still use removable tile on the floor for cleaning. Instead of the real tile I was also interested in created fake rocks but need to know the toxicity of them...
