Eyes?

Spike has really watery eyes today, both of them. The fluid, whatever it is, isn't totally clear and it sticks a little to my finger. He went to the vet recently and she hardly glanced at his eyes. I'll be spitting flames if something is wrong. I'm going to get her to call me today. In the meantime, does anyone know what it could be? He's not on sand, but when I got him he was and he had a coil UVB too, both are now gone. Thanks!

I just tried hand feeding him some greens. He's missing it by a couple of inches, he's aiming above them. He's never shown any sign of sight problems before, or I've never noticed them. I'm really worried about him

I called the vet and they said she will call later.

Get some saline eye wash and gently flush his eyes. He could have sand in them from before, if they stay sticky or get worse he will probably need some kind of antibiotic eye ointment.

Yes, you can just pour it slowly over the eyes. How long ago was your beardie on the sand and under the coil UVB?
Have you noticed any other odd behaviors such as gaping more than normal, noises from his mouth(popping, crackling, gurgling, wheezing, etc...)?
Does he have any mucous/discharge in or around the nose or mouth?
A discharge from the eyes could also be a sign of a respiratory infection.
What are the temps in the basking and coolside?
What type thermometer are you using? digital w/probe, stick-on, temp gun?
Do you know what the humidity is in the viv?

Hot end is 91.4, cool end is 83.9 but usually a couple degrees higher (I have my window open).
Using a digital thermometer with probes. No unusual behaviour or noises and no discharge around the nose or mouth. He otherwise seems happy and alert, and will notice birds and planes (even from afar) provided he doesn't have his eyes closed, which he is doing a lot.

He was on sand and with a coil until thursday/friday. He now has a reptisun 5.0 tube, but I'm aware he needs at least an 8.0 and am getting one soon. I'm unsure of humidity, I only realised when I got home the thermometer didn't have the feature. It's also on my 'to-do ASAP' list!

I just managed to pillage some sodium chloride topical irrigation solution. If my chemistry is correct, it's safe to use this, right?

Your temps should be 105-110 and a reptisun 10.0 is best for desert reptiles. Flush the eyes and use the ointment but i would really see what the vet would say cause information on here is a bit over board sir. Your vet is the best option. Good luck to your dragon

I spoke to the vet on the phone earlier, but by the time she called his eyes seemed to have cleared up. The exact same thing happened right before the vet checkup he had saturday. It's like a disappearing eye condition! Spike is about 4 years old, I neglected to mention that in my post, sorry! I've always read/been told you should lower the temps a little when they get older. I intend to get him a reptisun 10.0 tomorrow. I'll soon be moving him into a new viv with a little less floor space but more height, as he likes to climb.

I'm not going to take the risk with him. He was resting in his tank with his eyes closed, and when he opened one, the gunk was sticking out. I VERY carefully removed it, and it is retained skin from a bad shed. I have noticed other bits on him, but the skin in his eyes has been there for a while. It's right on the bit that goes just behind his eyelid, and I'm not comfortable poking about with my clumsy hands so close to his eye. I'm going to get some proper solution tomorrow and wash his eyes. If that fails, I'll call my vet and have her take a look.

Thanks to everyone for the advice!

Hi

How is your guy doing?

I wouldn't use the out of date eye ointment either, maybe it is just a bit of his shed that has irritated his eye.

I would also like to say that any information that you get on this site is more than likely to be the correct information, as there are a lot of experienced and caring people here, that have your beardies interests at heart.

I'm new to beardies and everyone here has helped me out so much
Good luck, hope he gets better soon

Indeed, I have found the information here to be the best I can find. It's got me through a few panics pretty well, I've been a lurker here for years.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
