Ryuu's been pretending to brumate lately, and I've been trying to leave her be and let her sleep (poorly- it's boring when she sleeps!). Today though, I heard a familiar scratching sound and went to see what was up. Ryuu was spazzing out trying to chase a HUGE roach on the wall behind her tank. I killed the roach :puke: and got the biggest stink eye ever. She's decided she's done with crickets, picky about super worms, and loves horn worms (but we can't feed her those all the time)- but after seeing her wake up from a half sleep to spazz over such a big gross bug.... I think I may have to get some roaches for her in the spring. I've never seen her act like that!

I suppose in January or so I will start figuring out what or how to go about getting her roaches *shudders*

that's cute! haha. how old is she? mine are getting tired of crickets too but im not so sure about roaches being in the house myself =[ LOL

I feed dubia roaches and there's usually a few little ones that got out of the dish hiding somewhere in the tank. It's funny because when I turn the lights on in the morning it usually scares one of them out. My little guy goes from dead asleep to pounce mode to eat them up :)

It sounds gross to have roaches for feeders, but they're really not as bad as you'd think. They're WAY easier to deal with than crickets on any day.

That I get, but we've lived in some apartments that were overrun with German roaches and grew up with the HUGE flying ones in FL. I know they are different, and I've read a lot about the feeders, but I still can't get past the fact it's roaches lol I'm going to have to break down though and get her some for the spring and will probably start a colony when we move down south since she won't brumate quite as long (no winter in Florida... not like here!)

Dumb question: can they climb walls and stuff? I mean, if I put them in a big, dark Rubbermaid tub, will they crawl on the sides?

Not really, that's part of why they're good feeders. I've heard that the babies can climb, so people recommend putting a layer of packing tape around the top inside, but I've never seen one actually climb a wall. They don't bite either, so if one doesn't get eaten it's not a huge deal, you don't have to find and take it out like you would a cricket.

Yah the mental block is hard to get around sometimes :) Though if you're moving to FL it isn't an issue, they're not legal to keep down there sadly.

ok, so I found that Discoid and Deathhead roaches are allowed in FL... but the pictures of them are GROSS... are they decent feeders? I can't find any more info on them.

Phew! As a Floridian I am RELIEVED to hear that no matter how bad my dragons may want those :puke: (i can't even say it) bugs! they aren't legal! I can def sympathize with you on the palmetto bugs. I would get them in my old apartment sometimes. They literally used to chase me and my ferrets through the apt. *shudders* Ok now i'm itchy...

LOL they make me twitchy too. I have curly hair, and some nights they would fly into my hair... need I say more? I got the hose put on me more than once to get rid of them....

They make me beyond twitchy but I've resorted to keeping a bin. Angie's not eaten any yet - she was going thru her "Not eating" phase so we've yet to try. I'm actually getting ready to switch to a new, larger bin for the roaches. I have both dubias and madagascar hissers in the same bin (w/o problem) and the little ones CAN CRAWL up the sides but get caught at the tape (often inside the tape). There've only been a few times where the kids actually found a few stragglers that somehow got out and they put them back in. I have NO IDEA how that happened either as I also have a schmear of vaseline above that tape like a second line of escape defense! :banghead:

Get the roaches now so by the time your beardie is out of brumation, you'll have a nice colony started!

I am a native Floridian also and I CANNOT abide by roaches of any kind! There is just no way I can ever allow those things into my house. The lady at the pet store keeps telling us an occasional pinkie is also good for them.....thoughts? I am SQUIGGED out by the very idea of them! I love baby hamsters and lets face it mice aren't far off from hamsters!

If Spike wants a treat, he can enjoy the Reptiworms I just bought him! LOL

if we're going to Florida, i'm not even going to start with the dubia's... no point. i may talk my brother in law into starting a colony of something for me since he's got reptiles and wanting to get back into breeding beardies.... it'll be good for him! in the mean time, she's brumating, so i'm not worrying about any type of food right now, and she'll have to deal with whatever i get her until we move... it's not like crickets, superworms or hornworms are BAD for her, she's just turning into a miss-picky-pants.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
