Hey everyone :)

I'm still fairly new to this forum, but I'm getting stuck in now :)

I thought Yoshi deserved a thread of his own too, as I've got lots of great photos to share with you all. I've had him for about 4 months now. He's almost 6 months old :D I'm from the UK, and I live in the north west of England. I bought him from a reptile pet shop called the reptile room http://www.thereptileroom.co.uk which is in Thornton, near Blackpool. for all you UK members who live up north, I highly highly reccomend them. They love all their animals and are full of advice. they even do a holiday service so you can leave your beardie with someone you know you can trust!

anyway, photos! Here he is on his way home from the pet shop.....

Awww, what a cutie! Love his coloring. :D

As far as those lab results go, I'm not sure why it says "Salmonella PRESUMPTIVE POSITIVE" as that makes no sense.

This means that these certain antibiotics will clear it up that's why they say "sensitive" the Metronidazole is resistant to it so it wouldn't clear it up.
Augmentin Sensitive
Ceftazidime Sensitive
Gentamicin Sensitive
Amikacin Sensitive
Enrofloxacin Sensitive
Marbofloxacin Sensitive
Doxycycline Sensitive
Metronidazole RESISTANT

Also, there are "NUMEROUS NEMATODE OVA AND COCCIDIA SEEN which means eggs and a high amount of parasites so you should get him treated with antibiotics although sometimes the coccidia counts comes down on its own. Does that help?

that does help, thanks.

I was most confused about the sensitive thing, but yeah that makes sense. The salmonella they presumed was positive because he is a lizard! and apparently, the test for that takes longer than these, so thats why it says "Confirmation and serotype to follow"

I'm going mental thinking about it. I have done everything right. the only thing I can think is that he's had it before he came home to me. :banghead:

Hello,

Diane is right. :D
That just means that those drugs listed would clear up the Salmonella easily, except for the Metronidazole which would not affect that particular strain of bacteria.
Most lizards will have low levels of salmonella which normally do not affect their health. In the cases where it IS affecting their health it is best to get it treated to lower the levels so their health does improve.
As far as the Aspergillus goes, that "can" be normally found as well, just as a normal bacteria flora in their mouth. It can cause problems such as swelling of the gums, respiratory issues, etc but if it is not in high levels, it will do nothing at all.

Overall, I would just treat the coccidia, & the rest will lower on its' own. Since the coccidia levels are high, so it seems, that alone is enough to cause elevations in the other bacteria which will throw everything else out of balance right now. I would say to do just a basic 7-10 day cycle of Albon or since you are in the UK, I believe that Ponazuril is used relatively often which is a specific anti-coccidial agent. It is expensive, but, effective from everything that I have researched. The nice thing about it is that it should only need to be used 1, maybe 2 times MAX because it is highly effective, compared to Sulfa based drugs like Albon which have to be used for at least 7-12 days to be effective. So, you might inquire about that drug, instead.

However, one other thing to think about here is whether or not to medicate. IF he is eating well, & doing well, in general, you might want to consider NOT medicating for awhile longer to see if you can allow his own immune system to lower the coccidia on his own just to avoid medications. Sometimes if given time, their levels will lower naturally without any type of medication. Sometimes, they wont. The problem is that a lot of times if they are doing good & have a healthy appetite that it is best not to medicate them unless their health is being affected negatively. Medications sometimes can make the situation worse instead of better, it all just depends on the individual circumstances. So, those are just some things to consider beforehand. You know your baby better than we do, so, if you feel he would benefit from a short medication round, then, that is ok.
Your boy is so beautiful, he looks awesome. :D

thank you both so much for your replies.

He IS eating well. Eats everything I offer him. He never eats all of his greens but he is eating some. He is alert, active and loves coming out to play. I'm going to make an appointment with a vet tomorrow, and see what they feel also. but you could be right, it could be not worth treating as he seems absolutely fine. Dilemma! I will keep you updated with what the vet says on this thread.

Thanks again

Hello Leanne,

Let us know what you decide on medications for him. That is great he is eating so well right now & is seemingly healthy also. It sounds like he is doing petty well overall so that is a tough decision for you. :D

Hi Tracie,

thank you so much :) I am taking him to the vet today for a check up, and to discuss the results of his faecal. I haven't been to this vet before so I hope they don't get all "HE NEEDS MEDS" when he might not. I'm taking my big bad boyfriend for backup support! lol :)

been snap happy recently with my guy, so here are some more piccies :) Will report back tonight (UK time mind) and let you know what they said.

Im not sure how they managed to do sensitivity testing without confirming salmonella. Thats like saying what size you want without saying what it is your buying. But yes generally we dont treat salmonella as its naturally occurring. Im just being picky, but its my job so things like that really grate on me! (vent over)

Im sure they wont treat, the general rule here in the UK is unless its EXCEPTIONALLY high they let the immune system do its thing. You can think of it the same way you think of thrush in humans. Its annoying, but generally sorts its self out, in rare cases it can cause problems in which its treated. Lets us know how it goes!

hey everyone.

Well, back from the vets. They have given me some medication, but only a short course to get him started on getting rid of it. Vet was really nice and seemed to know his stuff. he was more bothered about the ringworm than the coccidia, although gave me something for both. just treating him for a week for coccidia, and 4 weeks (one dose a week) for the ringworm. he said as theres a high number of eggs in his system, you need to kill them as they "hatch" because you cant get rid of the eggs. if it was left, he could end up with a really high level of ringworm. very reasonable price too of 30 quid (about $45) for consultation and meds, so I'm happy. he also said Yoshi was beautiful :D and that he was otherwise looking well. weight, length etc for his age.

I'll try keep you all up to date with his progress :) but I'm pretty happy and confident that he should be fine. :D

Your dragon is beautiful! Wow!

I think this is ironic: I was going to name him Yoshi. Lol. That's what my boyfriend wanted to name him, but I wanted something more unique, so I named him Vash. I'm glad I did, too, because so far no one else on here has a dragon named Vash. I like to be unique with names.

My dragon had hookworm and roundworm when I got him, and he's also had a high coccidia count for months but he was so small when I got him that they couldn't treat it very well (I took him in to the vet in a little plastic tub and everyone was like "Aww, he's so tiny! Oh my goodness, look at him!!!")

They got rid of the worms but the coccidia was still high, so a couple weeks ago he went through medication for coccidia.
So I feel your pain. It's tough knowing your beardie is sick, but it's almost definitely not your fault. Mine has had these problems since I got him and that was four months ago. I still haven't gotten rid of them. But with lots of loving care, I'm sure both our dragons will be fine. :)

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
