Egg crate lid for Viv ?

Has anyone here used a lid made out of egg crate ? I found a seller that has 40 gallon breeders for $35 without a lid and they make custom lids for $15 but they're made out of egg crate and I haven't seen anyone here using one of those.

Should I go for it and get just the tank and find a lid elsewhere or is the egg crate okay ?

That's a pretty good price for a tank that size. I'd at least get the tank. Do the lids allow for good ventilation? If you don't have other animals in the house you may not need a lid. I don't use one on my tank.

I looked up egg crate online and it looks like it'd allow for good ventilation . I won't have any other pets for the meantime but will soon , Boxer dog . I'm just wondering if it's heat resistant and if it would allow enough light from the basking light to go through and heat properly ?

I'd imagine it would block UVB so you'd need to mount your UVB light inside. I'm not sure about the basking light but I wouldn't put it in direct contact with the top.

Yeah I was planning on mounting the UVB inside either way. Do you have any experience rigging it to hang the basking light inside somehow ? Maybe letting it hang from the egg crate somehow?

I use an adjustable lamp stand for my basking light. It sits a few inches above where the screen top would be. You wouldn't have enough clearance to mount it inside a 40g breeder and still have it at a safe distance with appropriate temps.

I think I'm going to just get both the tank and lid and an adjustable lamp stand for the basking light . Thank you !

If the egg rate is the stuff in thinking about, fluorescent light diffuser panel, it can be sort of brittle. Since its for fluorescent lights not sure how well it will stand up to heat but interesting idea.
