Dubia ratio

I like to keep them at a 5 to 1 Female/Male ratio up to about 500 Females. Anything over 500 Females I go 10 to 1. I even go like 15 to 1 in colonies over 2500 Females. I used to keep way too many males until my buddy Jason "The Roach Guy" gave me this tip way back. I believe he keeps his at like a 10 to 1 ratio all the time. Maybe he'll chirp in here and give you his exact ratio. Less males work like a charm though w/ production rates.

I have been keeping mine at 4 to 1 up to 500 females and I thought production was good. Maybe I'll make some adjustments and see if production improves. Thanks Ian for the input, always appreciated.

Well, if one male mates with a single female each night of the month, thats 30 different females. If that female is gravid for longer than 30 days, he can mate with well over 35 before the first one gives birth.

Forgive the noobness factor of this question, but it's been perplexing me.

Say I have 40 females and 40 males.. would I get higher production yields if I drop the number of males down to say, 10 or 5? Do the males tend to spend more time fighting amongst themselves instead of spreading seeds? Or do the females just get bothered too much to give it up? Just wild guesses, but I can't come up with a reason why having less males would bring higher yield.

A pre-thanks for any insight from the pros!

In real small colonies like you have it may not be too big of a deal. The males do get rambunctious though and in large colonies and hundreds of males coming out when the lights go off they really cause problems in the mating dept. If anything I'd just feed off some Males and get it down to 20 or 25 of them. Ratio's become more important the more females you are trying to breed.

As far as a problem with to many males, I would say no. I have witnessed 2 males "fighting" for a mate and another male sneak in. I just hate feeding so many males (when you have as man as us big breeders it adds up)

With such a small colony, maybe 1 male to every 2 females. I've been running mine at 1 male to 5 females. Too many males chew each other's wings up and can harass the females, stressing them out.

IMO wing chewing isnt about to many males, its not enough protein in the diet. I have a feed out tub of just males and 0 chew on wings.

I was just wondering because I just started another colony with 27 females and 8 males and wanted to know how much the ratio would affect production.

I was running them 1.8 but my male population exploded and value of males is low so I just keep them all.

I would say 1.4 is optimal....

Males will start looking or ways to escape their bins since this is crowding their territory

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
