Dubia > Crickets !!!HANDS DOWN!!!

I'm posting to plead the case for dubia roaches to the people who are scared of them & are still buying crickets. If you're a kid & you're parents are totally against the idea of roaches, have them read this! The only thing that I can think of, that could possibly be a disadvantage of keeping dubia roaches over crickets, is the fact that roaches get a bad reputation. They've always been known as filthy, disgusting bugs that are scratchy & can sometimes fly! If you're taking care of them, you know where it's been & what it's eaten, they can not bite, poison, sting or hurt you in any way. I wouldn't try sticking them in your nose or anything, that probably wouldn't turn out very well.

The following is an awesome bullet point list of dubia to cricket advantages:

* Roaches don't make any NOISE!! This is probably the biggest seller for me, even better than the cleanliness. Nothing worse than losing a whole nights sleep over one little cricket that you can't find!!! :banghead:
* They reproduce way easier than crickets. The one draw back is time, plan ahead & you'll have roaches a plenty! Which I know you are looking forward to!!!
* From what I've read, they will not survive away from their heat source & food in tank. Dubias are very tropical bugs, & unlike typical house roaches, need a lot of heat in order to live healthy & reproduce. (you will need a heat source when keeping them) I have yet to lose one, so I couldn't not personally verify this one. (*******EDIT: please see post below from some people who have claimed to have breed dubias at room temperature*****)
* They're way tougher than crickets. Crickets die if you look at them wrong. I'm always finding a few dead crickets hear & there. I think I had one roach die on me this month of old age.
* The meat to exoskeleton ratio is higher on the roaches than on the crickets.
* Like white men, Roaches Can't Jump! (it's a movie if you're too young to get it, ask your mommy/daddy...) They're also horrible climbers. However, like cricket babies, roach babies can sometimes climb corners of tanks because they're light, so always remember to place clear packing tape around the perimeter at the top of the tank. This will keep them from escaping, it's too slick to climb.
* They are on a different level of cleanliness than crickets. You'll have to clean their tank much less, replace the egg cartons/cardboard tubes much less, etc.

After a couple of months, this is my growing roach colony of about 500, when you look in the tank at least in the daytime, it looks like nothings in there. They mostly stay in a cluster in the middle of the egg grates near the bottom of the tub that sits on top of a heating pad (under the egg carton side). They typically feed at night.

Interesting that you can try to make a case to someone about them being better than crickets in so many ways & they usually say, "but it's a roach!" Then typically follow it up with a squeel like a little girl. If you are a little girl, it's ok, you should be afraid of roaches. If you're not... be a man!!! (or, a woman if you are one  ) Grab that roach & tell it "I'm not afraid of you roach!!! you can't hurt me!!!! you're not the boogie man I always thought you were!!!! ARrghahgha;elkgha;wkegaoihpcoixhpgoah!!!!!" And, you will the see the light, that little guy is your friend & he's the bearded's best meal he ever had. :D

Here's something that makes me go ewwwww... to the left is an egg carton that's been in the roach habitat for about a month, to the right is an egg carton that's been in my cricket tank of about 500 crickets for the same amount of time.

Nuff said!

I want to try roaches so bad, but they still creep me out a bit LOL You do make a good argument though!

Great job on the story. I've been using feeder roaches since 1998 and if it wasn't for a chance encounter w/ them at that juncture in time I was getting out of the Lizard hobby altogether. That's how much I HATE crickets. I give them another 5-10 years and crickets will become obsolete in the Reptile hobby. And you don't have to stop at Dubia. There are so many good feeder roaches. Heck if you own a Monitor they'll plow down full size Adult Maddy Hissers!

Just jumped on this website & saw a Terminex ad that says "Roaches can give you Salmonella, Call for a Quote!" So can your bearded dragon!! :D Ads like this are one of the things that keeps the bad stereotype hype up about roaches.

Don't forget to always wash your hands in any case!

Excellent points! :blob5:
Comparing Dubia to the local pest roaches is like comparing a beautiful luna moth to some kind of crop pest like fall armyworm or gypsy moth. "But they're both moths..."

Or comparing harmless fireflies to destructive Japanese beetles. "But they're both beetles..."

Within any taxonomic grouping there is a WIDE variation. Most people would never spray a luna moth simply because it's a moth, and I don't know of anyone who would kill a firefly simply because it's a beetle. Yet pest moths and beetles account for billions, literally billions of dollars of agricultural and residential damage. People perceive the difference when it comes to the more common insects, but it may take a while for knowledge about Dubia to become "perception."

Maybe we need to make a wildly popular movie about Dubia:

"COME TO THE DUBIA SIDE, YOUNG PADAWAN!"

No doubt roaches are better than crickets. When I found out about roaches, I switched almost immediately. I say almost, because I had to get my wife to agree. She can't stand roaches, but supports me all the way. My baby dragons grew much quicker on roaches compared to crickets. My other inverts grow much quicker on roaches too compared to crickets. Hands down, roaches all the way!

another post with incorrect information

roaches will survive and reproduce at low temps

I proved this in a 4 month trial with temps in the 60's.

also, place 500 adult roaches in the same environment as the crickets, and you will get similar results. (in regards to the egg crates)

and yes crickets die faster, it is nature and their life cycle. It does not make them better.

They also reproduce and grow to various sizes MUCH quicker.

And, they're cheaper.

As I've said, I've never personally tested breeding dubias at lower temperatures, that's why I said:

Wonder why so many people say dubia do not breed unless they have higher temps? Bad rumor??? Can anyone else verify on this? Apologies on this information it is indeed wrong. I'm just posting information that I've read over & over in many places. I had assumed coming from so many sources, it would be valid.

However, all of the other points that I posted are valid in my opinion. Regarding cleanliness... my roaches & crickets have been kept in the exact same conditions for about a month when this picture was shot. Both started with clean egg crates at the same time. Does it have to do with 500 adults & not a mixed size colony of 500? Do roaches start making little wet diarrhea spats all over the egg cartons, just like the crickets, when the adult dubia count reaches 500? Funny, I probably have 80 or so adults now & they've been pooping in hard little black balls for the last few months, leaving the egg cartons virtually spotless. You saw the pic, right? I'll report back on this point when my adult dubia count reaches 500 or so, I could be wrong...

In all honestly the biggest seller for me is the noise factor. Nothing worse than losing sleep over 1 lousy cricket. Also, the fact that they breed very easily if housed properly & given enough time. They're tons easier to breed than crickets.

My colonies have been producing 1000's of nymphs every month all winter at temps as low as 72F night and 78F days, no heating pads used at all.

Thanks for chiming in. To me, if it's true, it's good news. Now when my colony expands into another container, I won't have to get another heating element for that one. They're much easier to keep from escaping, than crickets, due to the fact that they don't jump. So, I'm not worried about losing any.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
