Dubia colony for one beardie?

I have a 5 1/2 month old Dragon and I've been buying him dubias as a staple with small supers and occasional crickets but as everyone knows buying feeders for a growing dragon costs a pretty penny so I was considering making a dubia roach colony for my only dragon.

Now I know the requirements to keep and breed them and what to feed them but is it really worth breeding dubai just for one beardie considering that when I get to have a stable colony and start feeding them, he will probably be almost an adult and will be eating mostly greens? I mean I could just sell what I don't need but is it really worth it? I want to know everyones opinion on this thankyou!

I plan on start my on colony when I get some extra cash to. I think it is still a good idea to have a small colony for your beardie. With extras you can sell or just to have extras just in case you have to feed another lizard. They don't die fast like I have seen with crickets. So to me it would be a good idea to start a small one. :D

I started a dubia roach colony about 9 months ago in anticipation of getting a bearded dragon. It took me a little longer to get the dragon than I anticipated. We finally got the dragon last week and needless to say I have a colony of roaches that should last a lifetime. The intial investment I made in the roaches was $100 for 800 various sizes (30 adult females or so and a lot of juvies and babies). I just cleaned out the roach bin last weekend and counted 568 adult females and so many babies and juvies I couldn't possible count them, probably 5,000 plus. Breeding the roaches has been extremely easy for me. I had a rubbermaid bin on top of a home heatpad, and I feed them veggies, catfood, fishflakes, and give them watergel. I've probably only had 10 adults die the entire time for whatever reason, compared to the 2 dozen of the 3 dozen pinhead crickets I bought at the petstore the same day I bought the dragon. If you have the initial investment money to start the colony I would say go for it and never have to buy another cricket. I'm not sure yet what size a bearded dragon has to be before they can eat an adult male dubia roach, but if yours is big enough I have a few hundred just sitting around waiting to be eaten. :)

yes it is worth it i have found a few tricks i use to mass produce my roaches on a cheap scale get a cheap heating pad and put a few layers of cloth between the bottom of the roach bucket and the heating pad, make sure the colony stays as dry as possible moisture can take them out [already expierianced this] then cut up a potato and position it around the inside of the container for them to eat on and forget about them, only go to them when u need sum food products for your dragon the only way this can make the breeding process quicker is if you get a heating pad that shuts off automatically after 15min or so or put a timer on them, they really dont need any light but i have noticed of u can keep it a good 80 degrees in there theyll do some baby makin :study:

It'll be easier for me since I live in a tropical area and temps here are perfect for breeding them :)
I'll definitely look them up

I only have one Bearded Dragon and I have a dubia colony and a superworm "collection" (I can't really call it a colony since I'm not breeding them). The "Roach Motel" is from Twobeardieguy over in the For Sale forum; the "Superworm Super 8" is (what started out as) 500 worms from Great Lakes Hornworms in a plastic shoe box.

I've been very pleased with both experiments and I *LOVE*LOVE*LOVE* having my feeders right there, ready for my little guy, healthy and gut-loaded.

Problem with this is that its really difficult for me to get dubia females online because no one wants to ship to Puerto Rico probably thinking its international shipping and don't want to risk it so I'd had to find someone here to sell me some and thats practically imposible really so if someone is willing to sell me a couple of your breeders let me know <333

Can you ship priority (2-3) using Postal Service to Puerto Rico? I've never shipped any of my own dubia, but I would send you a few so you can start a colony. Also, is it legal to ship this species to PR? I know that you can't ship them to Florida.

I'm interested in selling some of my nymphs, I just have way to many for my one dragon to eat.

I guess they're legal because there's like a small reptile company here selling but only nymphs all sizes and male adults and don't want to sell their females haha and people here tend to settle for crickets as feeders so the dubia selling industry isn't big here.
And yes you can ship priority with USPS to PR. If you're willing to sell some to me I can get a some females and males and maybe a few nymphs all sizes too.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
