Ok so I've had my female dragon Spotty since last March. She's always been a heavy eater and we really had no problems with her. She ate crickets, wax worms occasionaly, greens, raspberries, dubias, and even the commercial bearded dragon food. About three months ago though, she started sleeping all of the time and hardly eats. Every once and awhile she'll have random bursts of energy and stays up running around her tank. She hasn't really lost any weight or anything. She loves being held and is completly fine out of the tank just in the tank all she wants to do is sleep. We haven't ran a fecal or anything yet because she hasn't pooped in awhile and im starting to get concerned.
She lives in a 40 gal. viv with a mercury sun light bulb. The cool side of her tank ranges from anywhere between 74F to 78F. The warm side of her tank is always between 85F to 90F and her basking rock, even though she is never on it, stays at about 103F. At night time, we use the ceramic heat emitter which keeps the tank at 76F. We check that with the probe thermometer not the stick on kind. The substrate is a tile substrate, and all she has in her tank is her bed I made her, her basking rock, her food dishes, a hammick, and some climbing stuff. Her lights come on at 6:30 and go off anywhere between 9:30 to 10.
We give her liquid calcium, I'm not sure how much since my fiancee is the one who takes care of that, just so that we know she's getting atleast something. She's not the same little dragon she used to be. If she does eat, its usually some soy yogurt that we by for her and about once a week she may eat a superworm or dubia depending on her mood but it is only ever one. We bath just about everyday to keep her hydrated since she won't even touch her veggies that she used to love. i'm setting up an appointment with the vet today finally since we finally have the money for anything that needs done, although we still can't do a fecal since she hasn't pooped. Last time we took her about 4 months ago everything was fine. The vet even told us that she is one of the healthiest and happiest dragons he has ever seen and told us not to change a thing, which we haven't. Could this be beardie brumation or is something else I should ask the vet about?

Our dragon just woke up from brumation last night! He was sleeping for a solid month. Have you read the FAQ/information on brumation yet? We had to play the guessing game with our dragon and we were so stressed out since this is our first dragon and first brumation! I was so worried he would just die in his sleep and we wouldn't know it. :silent:

One thing that strikes me is how much daylight your beardie gets. So your lights are on 6:30am - 9:30pm in the winter? Just clarifying that one since it's dark outside way before 9:30 right now. We have our lights on about a 12 hour cycle - on at 6am and off at 6:30pm. As the sun stays out longer we will lengthen their days.

We used to have the lights set from 9:00-9:00 but before all this happened, when we woke up at 6:30 the dragons were right there with us waking up and jumping around wanting their breakfast. We have three dragons, before anybody asks yes they are all in sperate tanks were they aren't bothering each other, and the other two wake up still when we get up and the usually hang out with us watching Tv and stuff at night time with so signs of getting tired. Plus they are really active during the day. I stay at home doing online schooling so i see them all the time and I'm constantly holding one of them and letting them run around the room. Tiny is only a month behind our Spotty and yet he's still just the same hyper dragon he always has been with no problems. If it was our lighting cycle, wouldn't this effect all three of them? Would it be any different for Spotty since she's a girl?
I've read all about brumation online but even knowing all of that I'm still not sure. I hope it is only brumation though. I just don't understand why she's the only one doing it. Plus, when we get her out to give her a bath she does that fine and she'll start running around our room hyper as ever and even after an hour or so and we go to put her back in she climbs up our arms trying to stay out but then she'll just sleep in there and you cant tell that she was hyper only a few minutes ago. is this normal with brumation or is it something in her tank that we have wrong?

Our dragon did this 'trying to sleep' brumation and started brumating at 6-1/2 months old! So we were confused, too. He had just had Panacur for ascarids and got over that a little rough, then started the random sleeping and hiding in dark places during the day so we had that OMG is he sick or is this normal thing, too.

He would sleep for 2 days and then wake up and then sleep for a day and a half and then wake up. We finally covered him with his blankies and didn't disturb him and he finally did brumate. We just didn't have him in a good, dark area where he wouldn't be disturbed.

I have heard that some dragons never brumate, or don't brumate each year. Sure makes it tricky to know what is going on! :?

As for the lights, when we started researching to get our first bearded dragon, that was a question - how long is their 'daylight' hours and does it change summer to winter like it does outdoors? What we found is a lot of people who have happy and healthy beardies here use a a daylight/night 14/10 cycle in the summer and a daylight/night 12/12 cycle in the winter. So the winter days shorten and then as it gets close to summer the days lengthen.

Hello,

What brand is your Mercury vapor bulb? How old is it now?
Most of the mercury vapor bulbs are not very good & have terrible output right now or early burn out problems.
Is she housed alone, correct?
She could just be going through a seasonal shift when the days are getting longer but the weather is still up & down which tends to confuse them a little bit also.
Do you have any pictures of her?

Hi everyone,

This is my first time posting in the forum. I actually have the same problem with my beardie. He's 10 years old now, and he has always been good, until he got this left eye infection. He couldn't open his eye, and I was gone for a week and gave him to my friend who works at a pet store. Came back his eye got worse, i got this eye drop from the pet store and his eye opened the day after, but since then, his health's been much worse. Now he won't eat, won't move (he still poops). His eyes are completely shut. He maybe moves once or twice a day. The past 2 days his leg been twitching... but when I calmed him down he's okay. I got this emergency aid thing for him, and he ate just a little bit of that.

I don't know what's wrong with him, he's never done this before. He's losing weight and I really hate to see him just laying there looking lifeless :( Please help!

We will certainly help. But, please make your own thread and include the symptoms and cage setup there. Also, you should read the site's rules and policies. Try not to Thread Hijack in the future.

@tf2185
Yes please let us know what exactly you are using. Type, Brand, Etc.. Pictures would help as well.

I'm not sure you are having the same problem as the original poster! Do you think you should start your own thread maybe so the different advice doesn't get mixed up. I am wondering if people who reply to you and people who reply to the original poster will get the replies confused and we won't know who is responding to whom!

Welcome to bd.org, by the way. If you have a problem with your dragon, don't hesitate to start your own thread. That way you can get all of YOUR questions answered. People here really and truly care, and if you can follow their advice, they will very often figure out what the problem is.

Thank you! I'm so glad i found this forum. I assume that my bf knows how to take care of our bearded dragon because he's always been so good. But now these problems came up, and we start researching and found out we did quite a few things that are not good for beardies :( I feel really embarrassed having a bearded dragon and don't know how to take care of him. But I'm trying my best, and hopefully he'll get better soon. If not I'll take him to the vet.

JOIN THE CLUB. We made mistakes, too and learned from this site. You are not alone in your errors and more people will come here after you looking for advice. You chose a non-standard pet and that means not everyone knows how to take care of them properly. You came here to learn and apply what you learn and you're going to be really happy once you get it right. It's just going to stink a little when you make your thread and people start asking you The Questions.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
