First, I want to thank everyone on this board. Your information has been my savior as a new beardie owner.
Alright, so I got Merlin about 2 weeks ago. I had him in a 10 gallon for about a week. PetCo had me convinced it was big enough, and it took me awhile to get back over there and re-buy everything in a bigger version. So, he's been in his 20L for about a week.
I'm not sure how old he is, but Merlin's about 6 1/2 inches long.
Feeding:
I give him fresh greens and water everyday. dandelion and collard greens mixed with a juvenile moist food mix. He eats some of each of these every day.
I feed him in his 10 gallon. Twice a day, as much as he'll eat in 10-15 minutes. He only eats 4-8 crickets in a feeding, and never more than 10-12 a day. I dust with Reptivite multi-vitamin once every other day. I do offer water every day in a shallow dish. I've heard mixed things about this, is there a problem with that?
Set up:
Like I said, I have a 20L tank. I use a CHE to keep the cool side warm and keep the humidity low at night. The cool side is about 80 degrees during the day and the basking spot is 100-105. I've heard that juveniles can do higher temps, but he won't bask if it gets any higher. The humidity is about 35-40 during the day and about 50 at night. It might get to 52...53? is that bad?
I use the CHE, a basking lamp, and a Zilla 50 Desert t8 tube bulb that sits on the lid. I've heard bad things about these bulbs and the above the lid light, but then again I've heard more than a few people say they've used my setup for years with no problems.. I'm not sure what to think of it.
Merlin:
He basks most of the time.. Honestly, when he is in the tank, I almost never see him out of his basking spot. I know he moves because he defecates on the cools side (which he does once a day by the way). He even sleeps in his basking spot unless I move him. He has a hiding spot, but I never see him in it... When I let him roam my room, he seems pretty active at first. He explores and darts around pretty quickly, usually trying to get trapped in a tiny crack or fly off something that would surely kill him :O! Anyway, I get the feeling that the entire time he's roaming around he's just trying to find a hidey-hole to burrow in and sleep. He always winds up doing this within a few minutes..
Does anyone see anything that could cause him to only eat this number of crickets? At first, I expected him to start eating more just because of the new environment, and maybe he still will, I'm just getting concerned. It might be worth noting that he hasn't shed yet.. I do bathe him every other day, if I haven't mentioned that yet. Thanks a million in advance, I hope this post isn't too long. I just want my beardie to be happy and healthy!
