Okay, the first day I got him I had intended on crickets as his staple protein. I know at this age they require less protein but I still had that figured out. I quickly realized he was a bit too lazy to hunt the crickets so to date he hasn't had a single one of those. I had bought mealworms and butterworms as treats and as that was the only thing he could get down he ended up with 6 mealies and 3 butters.

I read the exo terra dry pellets his previous owner was giving him and it states its a full diet and live food, if you wish to give it to them, only needs to be every couple of weeks.

So I don't know if Draco knows this and after this day that was enough live food for a period of time.

I've had him for a week now, when we got him he had one light that the guy thought was his heat light, but I took the bulb into a store and they told me it had to be a cfl - that the system he had going had to have been cfl on the top and heat pad on the bottom.

I felt the area the pad heated.. not good.. so we bought a 150w basking bulb as this looks more like an aquarium height than a reptile height tank, and I set it as low as possible, its probably more like 8-10" from his basking spot right now, I only have a temp dial at the moment, it only reads the air so I am not 100% on the heat of his specific basking rock but it is really warm and he loves to bask on it as opposed to before where he had to squeeze next to it to feel the little heat from the pad.

For a couple days he was great, so much more lively, the next day ate a few mealies and a super(I picked these up afterward realizing the crickets just weren't working). I mean I still wasn't sure he was getting enough to eat, his dish sucks so he knocks it around and its hard to tell how much he really eats, but I atleast knew he ate a bit alongside the few live feeds I gave him.

The last few days I've been more and more unsure if hes eating at all, I put in some collard greens with his pellet salad, I mixed in some of this reptile-life pellet food that also came with him thinking if he ate some of this he could be more inclined to eat the worms rather than the little mini exo terra pellets that say they cover everything.

Its the weekend so now I'm home all day... He basked for a few hours in the morning, didn't eat, then used the newspaper as a hide and has been sleeping there since.

I'm really starting to doubt the uvb bulb. I know everyone dislikes CFL's but if this turns out to be just a household fluorescent, then a repti-glo or even a reptisun cfl(yes the beloved reptisun 10.0 also comes in cfl) would be better than his current setup.

I want to just take him outside for a bit if the sun is the problem but its been raining the last couple days, rain stopped but still no sun :(

I'm pretty sure heat shouldn't be the issue, I almost wondered if with the insufficient heat his previous owner gave him he went into early brumation, but now when he is in his active moods he never eats because he is too busy trying to fight his own reflection. I have a backdrop but he sees himself from the sides. I've read many others saying they do this but then stop, I almost wonder if he is stressed in general and being wary of his new environment is causing him to be more aware of things like his own reflection possibly being threats.

Hopefully there is sun later on today or tomorrow and I can take him out, unfortunately I can't drop the 20-40 on a repti-glo or reptisun until this friday coming so getting him out in natural sun for now appears to be the best option.

I've got a slightly better dish in there now that is deep enough so he doesn't knock things around as much, the worms can't get out either it seems so I've left a few pieces of carrot as well so theres moisture for them and the worms seem to live in there well until he decides to eat them, if he does. I know he acknowledges the dish as he did look at it cock-eyed and then try to lunge in on it with his tongue, but then lost interest and left. He just doesn't seem to care, seems to be depressed, I don't know. I know he is nearing the end of a shed and I bathed him yesterday. He seemed to really enjoy it also, alot.

Oh and he seems to poo pretty much every other day I think. So he must be taking in enough to cause him to poop, I don't know.

I really don't want this thing to die on my watch after this random guy had a small heat pad and a questionable fluorescent setup.

Hi Gmagee...can you post a pic ? It can tell alot about his condition. As far as worms versus crickets, many beardies will hold out for the worms. As long as he's eating something, it's a good sign. Sometimes they get tired of the worms after a while, and surprise you by going for the crix. Give him some time. And he'll be O.K. without the bulbs until you can get them, just be sure his basking temp. is around 100, cool side 80.

Yeah, like I don't know if its just new house, new people, new setup, 7 year old senior, taking a bit longer than a week to fully be OK with everything. I know I have pics of him up on facebook, not sure how to put them into a thread from there.

It could be a combination of everything.. You have thrown a lot of stress on this guy (not your fault). He may take an adjustment period for him to get use to his new enviroment, new light, new heat, new food, and you. Watch him closely, watch his weight, color, the way he acts. Think about it, he lived 7 yrs with the way the previous owner had his setup, on top of being attached (so to speak) with the previous owner. Even if the new setup is healthier than the old he still needs to adjust...

He just ate 2 supers and a mealie. For the first time without any interference on my part. Up until now I've pretty much been lining everything up for him keeping them out of the paper etc etc etc. But this time he went right to his bowl and ate them one after another. Which only means its a matter of time he grabs some lettuce/carrots/collard greens semi-accidentally. I'm so pumped he's figuring out what that bowl is. I keep the worms in there all day with stuff that keeps them alive and ipso-facto its all stuff he can eat, its a great system :)

Good to hear that he is eating a bit! Please reconsider using cfl bulbs. The repti-glo in particular has been found to cause eye problems and lethargy. The tubular repti-sun and the arcadia 12% are recommended.

Yeah, I just need to figure out a way to clamp a tube fixture to the tank. I'm not really into the idea of sticking it with 3m adhesive as someone previously mentioned and I don't use a lid so I couldn't set it on that.

Anyone know anything about the Zilla Slimlines? I know reptisun is the preferred brand just they have a setup for sale at the moment where the fixture comes with the bulb and its not too expensive.. plus if I bought that I really wouldn't feel like running out and buying another bulb with it.

- - I'm going to try getting him outside for now on sunny days until I can upgrade

The sunshine is great for him! Just make sure he can get into a shady place when he wants to.

There are metal hooks on this site:
http://www.reptiza.net/beardeddragon.co/index.php?route=product/category&path=62&limit=75

I have a hinged top for my 40g. I attached the fixture to the underneath of the back side with zip ties. Works great!

I'm sorry, but the Zilla bulbs have been known to cause problems, too. You can get a 24" repti-sun bulb at http://petmountain.com/ for $24. There under-the-counter fixtures at Walmart you can use for $12.

Ahh thanks, that bracket is the exact thing. If he can hold out long enough I'll save for that. Part of me is thinking hes lived for seven years on this setup this can't be an urgent issue.

Hes progressing slowly. Yesterday he went to his bowl for the first time. Today I hand fed him about 10 or more pieces of collard greens, I don't think he ever tasted them before.

I just found out about "relocation stress" so he could have that going for him, as well as the relocation stress could be what caused him to not eat much in the first place, but then the not eating would make him weak causing a bigger issue.

Just a quick update to anyone keeping an eye on this:

Got home today and saw Draco for sure ate one of the supers in his bowl, not sure what else, I usually assume not much given his current track record. But that was another pleasing moment knowing that hes eating from the bowl himself and he knows where the food is and for all I know he could have eaten more.

This is where it gets good though. I noticed he was doing his usual its been 12 hours of heat I'm going to stay on the cool side till you shut that damn thing off deal, so I turned it off then went out to mow the lawn. When I came back in, not much new with the food, but he was elsewhere and mobile as he wasn't doing all that he could to keep cool. When I started taking his perishable food out of the dish(I like to remove any living uneaten worms as well as throw out any of the day old greens at this point) he started really perking up, in fact, a couple fell out of the bowl and I noticed he really zoned in.

So I tossed a few more out, I tossed out the other super, 5-10 mealies, a couple wax... all gone.. started with the wax then the super, and happily didn't turn his nose to the mealies. At times he can be a snob.. hes fully done away with crickets, so I know how many people advise upon crickets especially as a staple but he just won't do it. I've found the supers are probably the best alternative, they're big, fairly nutritious, agreeably higher fat content, but not as bad chitin-to-meat ratio as mealies.

So the few Supers made up the bulk size of his meal, followed by atleast 10 mealworms, and after he ate his 2 waxies I threw a couple more in.

Given the size of the supers and the heaviness of one waxworm, mixed in with a bunch of mealies, I could compare that to something like 1-2 dozen crickets.

Oh and he accidentally ate a one of his rep pellets when one mealie tried to hide behind it.. although I think he increased his precision after that mistake. Hand fed a couple pieces of greens... its as if hes either reverting back to baby-hood or he just knows hes being spoiled.

I know they can have their heat on 12-14 hours, so today hes going to have to push the 14 hours, because I know the heat should only go down so many hours after eating to allow him to digest, so yes don't worry I kicked that light back on, and its almost as if he knows cos hes got himself plopped on that rock but funnily enough his back 2 feet are still up, like hes crouching more than flattening out... he looks full like after a big thanksgiving feast, lol.

Maybe I overdid it, who knows, I'm just glad to get him eating again, I'll taper things back down once I'm sure hes consistent and I'm not just picking my moments, making the most of every opportunity to get him to get some good grub in.

Can you tell how happy I am? lol

Thanks to everyone with positive advice, Esther and AHBD thanks for keeping me calm, you seem to be completely right that he just needed time.

Well, that's really great. I'm rejoicing right along with you ! Sounds like he's on the right track, and keep offering those greens, even if by hand for now. Eventually he should eat those from the bowl as well....and if you have to scatter his food on the floor for now, no big deal, if that's how he wants it.

Yeah, I leave it all in a bowl deep enough to hold the worms in, and the greens etc seem to help keep the worms alive throughout the day. He seems to nibble a little bit like that but now when I get home he seems to know what "feeding time" is where I start taking them all out of the dish and scattering them and making a "hunt" out of it.. even with his diet and appetite hes acting like a big baby.

Its funny all the days he wouldn't eat anything (probably too stressed) I was doing all the same things, so now its as if he spent all those days picking up on the routines, whether or not he was deciding to take part in them at the time, lol.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
