I hope a similar question hasn't already been posted. I looked about 4 pages back and couldn't find anything! I am a pretty ignorant new beardie owner so am still learning what behavior is 'normal' and what could be a sign of a problem. I'm confused about something, so here goes:
We adopted a 3 year old male beardie named Beans about 3-4 weeks ago. He belonged to a really nice family we are good friends with. He lived in a young boy's room, in a tank up on a dresser. He was well taken care of, but never played with or handled. When we adopted Beans the family told us "good luck!!" They said he was crabby, always hissed and puffed up and never wanted to be held. I should mention they adopted him from another nice family we know. But I have no clue how much or how little attention Beans received from that family.
Well ever since we've brought him home, he's never hissed or puffed up once. We pick him up and hold him all the time and he seems to love it. We currently have his tank on the floor in our boys' room (planning to put it on a low bookshelf as soon as we get one). My older son will hold Beans on his chest/shoulder for up to 30 minutes at a time, just petting him and relaxing. Beans has never once gotten mad or tried to run away. I spend a LOT of time lying on the floor talking to Beans and smiling at him, and reaching in to pet him, if not picking him up to snuggle. He always seems interested in us, and makes eye contact. I hold him often throughout the day while my boys are at school. He seems to LOVE being held by me and will close his eyes and relax, even falling asleep on my shoulder if its close to bedtime. He never squirms or flails. Sometimes he will lift his head up and cock his head like a puppy when I talk to him. I think he is an absolute sweetheart, and have read posts that some beardies just have a really chill personality, but my question is: could he simply be terrified of us? I find it so odd that his previous owners thought he was such a stinker, but he's been nothing but sweet and docile with us. He doesn't seem afraid ... but again, I am ignorant and just don't know!
My other question is: Beans spends the majority of his day basking and chillin' like a villian. He cruises over without fail to eat his breakfast about an hour after his lights come on, and goes to his second favorite basking spot afterwards. He is always really alert and interested in what's going on, but doesn't run around or be very active. Except the last few days, when I've given Beans his afternoon treat of superworms or crickets, he turns into a total spaz afterwards!! We've always laid on the floor with our faces pressed up against the glass to watch him hunt, and it is so much fun. But his new thing is, he will find me and bump his nose against the glass over & over again, and claw at the glass over and over again, for quite a long time! I can't figure out if he's mad at me or wants to come out and play? He only does this to me, not to my boys or my husband, even when we are lying there all of us in a row. Today I decided to reach in and pick him up, and he sat calmly in my hands and listened to me talk and cocked his head from side to side. I have yet to put him down and let him run around, I worry he'll hide under the furniture and we'll never get him out .. but maybe he wants to come out and play around?
What is going on? This doesn't seem like aggressive behavior, but I just don't know! Does he like me? Or am I making him mad? Why would he act so weird with his previous owners, but so sweet with us?
