Do people really do this?

I was in Petco this morning checking out the Beardies and stuff. This couple came in, and was talking to the "reptile" person (who knew less than did about Beardies than I did) and the couple said they wanted to buy a cheap lizard that was low maintenance. They literally browsed the cages and prices without research, or asking questions other than how much and how much maintenance. I was actually pretty shocked. Do people really make decision on a pet like that? I am such an over researcher, so to see someone do that seemed really odd.

(sorry if this is posted in the wrong spot)

Unfortunatly, yes. :( it makes me livid.

Animals are pretty disposable/inconsequential to some people. You'd probably be pretty shocked too by how many people fail to recognize how sick their lizards end up if they do but them on impulse like that. Or that they don't feel it's important to give them good food or a suitable living space.

Another of it is because people trust pet stores, they should be reliable and give good advice, right? It's pretty uncommon to find a pet store that gives good advice or woudlnt happily sell a new owner a few hundred dollars of junk.

I wish pet stores couldn't sell live animals or many of the crappy products they do. As you research more you'll probably be surprized about the sheer variety of crappy products out there.

Unfortunately people do that and the animals suffer. I've seen people make decisions about purchasing new pets with little insight. My in-laws are one of those people. They purchased a large cat fish listening to the pet shop person who said it won't eat their other fish. They sold it back to the pet store.

I've gotten that crap from even at the high end aquarium store near me. "We are out of those fishy you want, but these are basically the same thing!" Was that ever untrue - differnt diet, space and water quality requirements. poor fish jumped out of the tank overnight and I didn't even have the chance to return him.

I have always been a huge animal lover of all types of creatures. So i hate seeing things like that. I love all animals but i would never go out and buy an animal without doing some sort of research first and talking to experienced owners.
It would be awesome to open a pet shop and actually have experienced people who knew what they were talking about in each area of the pet store. That would be a first! Now days, pet store employees are and I use these terms loosely..cashiers, reptile specialist, fish specialists and so on. It's rather ridiculous.

Hello,

Unfortunately, it happens all of the time. I can't hardly go into a pet store anymore or I would buy everything & then they would just bring more in. It's awful & I can't stand it.
I don't think people will ever wake up or have any respect for animals it seems.

That makes me so sad. My beardie was a special request at a the little local shop. So when Mort came in they made sure I had the set-up ready and were happy to babysit her until I had, and even had me visit a couple times to see if we liked each other. :)

I never thought of her as low-maintenance. Just not needing leash walks. ;)

it blew my mind when i went to get my Dragon from petsmart (i know but i live in a small town where there is no other way but to order online) and asked about stuff i knew from reading this site and the "pet" guy was telling me so much bull!! he knew nothing about dragons or what they needed but talk as he did. i could not take it anymore and had to bust his bubble a little. long story short i will never buy from a chain pet store again and if i am in there buying stuff for my other pets and hear some bull being blasted out it will take a lot for me not to butt in and say what i think..

I bought a beardie from Petsmart and he had yellow fungus, they didnt even let me look at him before i bought him, also the reptile person told us to feed him six crickets a day minimum when every website says to feed them until they stop eating or at least more than ten

I did hours on end on research before I actually purchased my beardie. :) I made sure I had an enclosure set up and everything before I went and picked him up. If only people did the research before purchasing an animal...

I've been rescuing dragons for 8 years and yes, they seem to be disposable. Two I bought at my local pet shop because they were dropped off my owners and left there. I brought Gabriel home in April 2012 and took him straight to the vet, he was dehydrated, underweight and loaded with parasites. He's now a beautiful almost 4 year old, and huge. He thinks he runs my home & is my security chief.

I got Titan at the same pet shop, in March/13; same scenario but he had been burned by his owners on the top of his head and along the left side of his face, badly enough so that he had no eyelashes on that side. I did the best I could for him, vetted him, got him good and plump; he was probably 7 mo old when I brought him home, until then I'd snuggle him every chance I got, I was in there almost daily. In Oct/13 he developed Yellow Fungus and died on Dec 19/13. He had a short life, but he was loved every minute of that life.

Gabriel now:

Titan May/13:

I've rescued alot of beardies over the last 8 years and I'm always disgusted at how dragons and other reptiles are considered disposable. I belong to alot of rescue groups & there are always heart breaking cases of abuse, but alot of the time rescuers are able to bring them back to good health.

So, yes, people really do this. They get reptiles with no idea how to care for them, then tell the pet shop it's their fault the reptile died. It's awful that people don't take the time to research, as you did and as I did. I got most of my answers over the years and made alot of friends on this site. One person saved my first dragon Sweetie and gave me the best advice that I've followed to this day: dragons are lovable reptiles and if they have the right living conditions, they will thrive.

My son wanted a snake. I wanted something we didn't have to feed mice to. I will admit that I went into the pet store looking for a *low maintenance* reptile, mainly because it was meant to be a 7 year old boys pet and we wanted him to take on the responsibility and care of his new pet. Cost was a factor, but not the main factor. We did get our beardie from Petsmart (didn't know better at the time) and I was sure to tell the *reptile* expert that we needed a beginner pet. I think it was the Chinese Crested Dragon we were looking at, and he suggested a beardie. We also looked at Gecko's. I took the brochures that Petsmart had, did a little research online, and finally made the decision that a beardie would be the best fit. Knowing what I know now, we should have bought his viv and set it up prior to purchasing him, but we purchased him and all of his supplies at the same time. I know we weren't supposed to handle him much in the first few days to allow him to get used to his new home, but try to tell a 7 year old that and see how it works out. We're insanely blessed in that our beardie is extremely social. I think in part that comes from us handling him right from the beginning. We kept it to just a few minutes a day for the first few days, but I'll admit I would get him out after the kids went to bed and he would fall asleep on my hands. He still loves to sleep on me and even if it's the middle of the day he'll curl up under my hair, dig himself in and take a nap. We still get him out every day for exercise and snuggles. The only exception was when we all recently had the flu.
Now, I am a researcher. I purchased a book on beardies at Petsmart when we got our beardie and quickly realized that I needed more help than that as the book led me to ask questions that I couldn't find the answer to in the book and the book often directly contradicted what we told when we got him. Which is how I found this site. Which is where I realized that pretty much everything we were told at Petsmart was incomplete or incorrect. After we had our beardie I did tons of research and I think he's set up the way he should be and has a pretty good beardie life. :)
I don't think that everyone goes into Petsmart or Petco looking for a disposable pet, but I do think people go in and don't really know what their getting or getting in to. Part of why we chose the beardie was their life span. We figured that our beardie will be nearing the end of his life about the same time our son is going off to college. When I have an animal, any animal, I am committed to that animal for life. We know that our son most likely won't be able to take his pet to college and since we'll be empty nesters at that point, we didn't necessarily want the added responsibility of another pet. Now, that being said, if our beardie is still alive when our son goes to school, and if he can't take or doesn't want to take him with him, he'll continue to live with us. I would never dispose of a pet that way, ever. And all of that being said, he's really grown on me. I do more with our beardie than anyone else in the house and he's sleeping on my shoulder as I type this out. He's really become a part of our family, in a way that I don't think a snake would have, and even Santa brings him special treats on Christmas. So yes, some people go into the pet store completely oblivious (I certainly feel like one of them), but if they are a responsible pet owner they'll come out and search for the knowledge they need to properly care for their new pet.
Ask my about our Hermit Crabs that we bought on the boardwalk and ended up having for four years.

One time I was in PetSmart and a girl had come in to buy a crested gecko. She was buying all the supplies AND the gecko at the same time. The conversation she was having with the salesperson made me so angry. The salesperson kept insisting she needed a UVB light, and she refused to buy one because they were expensive and "the tank would be right by a window" so she didn't think it needed a UVB light. She walked out of the store with the gecko, and no UVB. I felt so bad for that poor little guy :(

Crested geckos do not need UVB. However, the fact that she planned to put the tank by the window worries me. They are very temperature sensitive, and the sun can heat up the viv to the point that it kills the crestie.

Haha I don't know much about reptiles other than beardies that makes me feel a bit better about the situation

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
