I attended a reptile show today in New Orleans.
One vendor had juvenile Frillies that were imported that were emaciated. I wanted to vomit! The same vendor had some micro baby horned lizards that would need to eat pinhead crickets and he said if you feed the crickets vinnegar and water, then they mimic ants. Suposedly telling me that the horned lizards don't need to eat ants....I wasn't really sure about that.
The was another vendor that was even worse. Every animal he had was either emaciated or had obvious metabolic bone disease. Obvious skeletal deformities, lizards that looked like they had not eaten in weeks, dehydrated animals and animals with skin lesions. He had a horrible looking beardie that had a huge tumor/skin lesion on the tip of his bottom jaw.
It was just horrible. This particular show is where I got my frilled this spring, and I have a happy, healthy, captive bred animal. I also bought my marketed leucistic beardie "Ash" last year at this show, from Georgia Bearded Dragons. The show this time made me want to cry. The only thing I bought was a few cups of hornworms for my beardies. I got my hornworms from Carolina Designer Dragons. They had some nice beardies that were big and healthy. They were one of the few vendors that I would have even considered buying from.
I did tell the exotic animal Vet (who was doing free exams) and the show representative how disappointed I was with the show this year. I know they make money on big vendors, but if the animals are obviously being abused, how does that help their show?
Sorry, just had to vent!
