Dimmer stat?

How do i know my little guys stat is working? I got him from a young family yesterday and his conditions were poor. I now have him under a basking spot, but I have no idea if my his stat is working or not. Is there any way I can check? I have no thermometers right now, but it's on my list of things to buy for him tomorrow.

Well at least i know he's warm enough 'cause he's gaped a couple of times. Whenever he gapes I turn his basking lights off for a while because I don't want him to warm, but will doing this stress him out a lot? I don't want to stress him but what if he bakes?
