Digging box substrates?

One of my dragons is getting into his older years, and he just looks plain uncomfortable when he sleeps. I also wanted to give him something to do, so I was thinking of a digging box. He loves being wrapped up in blankets, but blankets are quite hard to wash poop out/off of, so I figured maybe his own little digging box would let him get all snuggly. But what should I put in the digging box? I've read alfalfa pellets...but that seems like it would be even more uncomfortable, and although his food is given to him in a bowl (he's on reptile carpet) I want the substrate to be something that is safe for him to ingest, just in case.

Ideas?

I read someone used dried dandelion leaves. You could order cleaned leaves from some where like NEherpetoculture to use.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
